The dealership offers 4x4 driver training courses once a month. “This covers the technical side, as well as physically driving the vehicle on proper 4x4 terrain,” Martin explains. In addition, it makes use of Base4 (home of the Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa, Gauteng Branch), a
short distance away in Doornrantjies near the Hennops River. “The 4x4 courses are open to anyone, even non-Toyota drivers. However, we insist that one of our experienced drivers accompany the driver.”
The Dakar handled well on the man- made 4x4 track, but this is a far cry from the conditions of the prestigious ally itself. Perhaps to really see what it’s made of, we need to join one of Halfway Toyota Fourways’ monthly trips to experience various parts of Gauteng. Or, better still, the Botswana 4x4 Off-Road Adventure
which runs from 13-26 October, led by one of Sa’s 4x4 gurus, Gerald O’Brian, who’s based at Halfway Toyota Scottburgh.
