Wine-lovers got excited when organic wines started making their way onto shelves – but that was just the beginning. At Vergenoegd Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, bottles of insecticide have been removed to make way for… ducks. (Yes, you read that correctly.) The


farm’s 700-strong flock of Indian runner ducks keeps the vineyards free of pests by munching snails and slugs as they patrol the vines. Also worthy of an eco-mention is Van Loveren’s Tangled Tree range. A large number of the vineyards used to produce this range of


wines aren’t under cultivation, while others are under conservation management. This has helped to boost local wildlife populations. The brand’s also made use of recyclable PET bottles, rather than glass, to minimise environmental impact.


Spier’s also in on the act, hiring treepreneurs who are supplied with tree seeds to plant, which can then be exchanged for food,
