Let’s face it, hand-made carpets and rugs have always been works of art in their own right: unique, individual and eminently multifaceted. And that’s something that’s been gaining momentum of late, thanks to the emergence of young talent from the art and design scene who are constantly rediscovering and reinventing the genre. Not only are they bringing new thinking to the way they look, adding radiance and individuality, they’re introducing materials such as leather, felt or wood, infusing new textures and adding a new feel to compliment the look. Ancient carpets, those that exude history, often embodying centuries-old cultures, are getting a makeover, using a multiplicity of processes to revive their appearance. Hand-knotted, hand-woven or hand-tufted carpets are distinguished
by their individual character. Every one is unique. Combined with variations in materials, colours and shapes, diff erent production processes never fail to achieve a unique look. Hand-made carpets are often seen as pivotal to interior design, adding elements that accentuate any room, giving it structure and creating a special atmosphere. From antique to modern and contemporary, from classic oriental rugs to leather, fur, jewelled and decorative carpets – the hand-made carpet can be either an ancient cultural asset or something that defi nes the mood of the moment. With carpets from Afghanistan, China, India, the Caucasus, Iran and many other places, the world of carpets meets once a year at DOMOTEX, and this year, there’s innovation in every sector. Machine-made woven carpets are also in demand at the moment,
unsurprising, given the numerous advantages they off er. For one thing, they are much faster to manufacture than hand-woven products, making them cheaper as a result. They also allow for the swift implementation of the latest trends, a fact not lost on those behind the scenes. But how can you tell? Contemporary
woven carpets are often masters of illusion – they look hand-made, but are actually made on machines. The DOMOTEX range includes large-area carpets as well as bridges, patterns, runners, bathroom sets, bed surrounds and step carpets. Textile fabrics are the all-rounders.
Thanks to constant manufacturing refi nements, even individual wishes in terms of size, colour and materials can be accommodated. And machine- made woven carpets continually impress with their complex patterns and fascinating play of colours, employing natural materials.
