Large white limestone blocks were cut into shape and sculpted before mounting. These were designed to fit neatly together within the architectural space.
Colour
The sculpture would have been even more dramatic originally when it was painted in full colour.
Note:
The Last Judgement scene survived the French Revolution
because the Church had grown ashamed of the crude Romanesque imagery and had covered it over with plaster in the 18th century. It was rediscovered in the 19th century.
Narrative Scenes on the Capitals
Some of the most charming and touching works of Romanesque sculpture are found on the capitals at Autun. The figures are cleverly combined with ornamental foliage to fit within the awkward shapes.
