1. Note the changes in design from the Stone to the Bronze Age. Can you explain the radical changes that occurred? Use annotated sketches to help explain your points.
2. Use annotated sketches to describe two methods of metalwork design construction from the Bronze age.
Figure 21.21 This bronze cauldron was found at Castlederg, Co. Tyrone. It is 56 cm in diameter. It is from the Dowris phase of the Late Bronze Age.
Age, both in gold and in bronze work. Skills and techniques had developed. Gold solder was used to join fine pieces of gold together. Clay moulds made of a number of parts were used to cast more complicated objects. Bronze was beaten into sheets and joined with rivets to create large cauldrons and other large vessels. Sophistication in design and workmanship is a hallmark of Late Bronze Age metalwork (Fig. 21.21).
By the end of the Bronze Age, design and technology had moved forward a long way from the Stone Age. The pace of change was increasing, as traders in gold, copper and other goods from Ireland met up with people from Britain and Europe, creating an exchange of ideas and technology alongside goods. Ireland, situated at the edge of the known world, was at the end of the line in terms of trade and innovation.
3. Which Bronze Age object appeals to you most? Describe the object in words and sketches and give reasons for your preference.
4. Describe the evolution of design and techniques from the Early Bronze Age through the Bishopsland and Dowris phases. Draw examples of pieces that you think show the changes best.
5. ‘Bronze Age designs were influenced by the techniques used to make them.’ Discuss this statement and use annotated sketches to illustrate your points.
