that gathered in St Ives, Cornwall. Her abstract sculpture had a major impact on the development of Modern art in Britain (Fig. 18.3).
Picasso Retrospective Exhibition
In the summer of 1960, Britain was overwhelmed by what the newspapers were calling ‘Picassomania’. The Picasso retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery London (Fig. 18.5) was the most extensive ever staged, and marked the moment when Picasso’s work – and Modernism – finally arrived in Britain.
The New Generation
Some of Britain’s most influential artists emerged during the 1960s from London art schools, and an explosion of new styles and techniques drew huge attention in the USA and Europe. By 1965, London was hailed as the new world centre of contemporary art and culture.
