Germany After World War II, Germany was divided. British and American powers occupied the Western part and the Soviet Union occupied the East.
Within the Eastern section, Berlin was also divided, and in 1961 Eastern authorities erected a wall separating the two parts of the city. This prevented the economic problem of the migration of East German workers to the West, but it also meant that families were split, and those employed in the West of the city were cut off from their jobs.
