HVAC and air handling


Like all ultra-clean production areas, the new AstraZeneca facility needed a consistently high standard of clean air supply, however, the air change requirement proposed by the initial user requirement specification – for 70 air changes/hour – would have been very energy inefficient.


By basing the airflow requirements for the facility on occupancy levels and gowning protocols and using computation fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to inform the design, the BES team was able to comply with the client’s request to reduce the requirement to 30 air changes/hour. The BES team carried out the complex calculations to verify that this could be achieved with the inclusion of HEPA Filtration and laminar airflow systems within the specification, along with room and air pressure control to avoid the risk of


contaminates entering the clean environment. To ensure that that HVAC plant maintained the required pressure regimes, the BES team designed automated dampers into the system to moderate the air flow as required, ensuring that the clean and sterile areas remain pressurised at all times. The production process also requires a temperature and humidity controlled environment, with a constant temperature range of 20-220˚C and a constant humidity range within 40-50%. Consequently, the
