IDSc: Masterclasses in education


The Annual Conference of the Institute of Decontamination Science (IDSc) takes place from Monday 26 until Wednesday 28 November 2018 at The Grand Hotel, North Shore in Blackpool. Playing host to a broad range of speakers and exhibitors, The Clinical Services Journal explores what’s on offer at this year’s event.


Visitors to the IDSc Annual Conference 2018 will be able to take part in a series of Plenary sessions. These sessions will educate and inform as delegates move into the Healthcare Science field so that they have the tools to assist in their decision making.


The conference is designed to appeal to all levels of health science staff involved in decontamination. Starting on Monday 26 November at 1:30pm, the conference will be opened by Professor Tony Young who will then introduce the keynote speaker.


Plenary Session 1


Endoscopy – Changing chemistry – An education


This educational session will equip delegates with the tools needed to undertake risk assessment and make informed decisions regarding the subject of changing endoscope washer disinfector chemistry. The speakers will look at this subject from their own specialist viewpoint, this includes endoscope and chemistry manufacturers,

operational managers and notified body. On Tuesday 27th November there are morning sessions on the following:


Plenary Session 2


Instruments – Water quality – How critical?


This session will dissect the issues and the outcome of poor water quality. It will take on an educational format where delegates will learn what to look for in practice on the medical devices that they process and what the limitations are of controlling the water quality.


Plenary Session 3


Detergents: Do we understand them? This session will explore the options of the available types of detergent with the risks and benefits associated, to ensure that the contamination has been reduced to the lowest possible level, in line with the new standards that have been issued. Tuesday afternoon session is dedicated to education as the changes are beginning to take place.


Plenary Session 4


Explanation of career pathway and qualifications


Have you heard this a 100 times before and still don’t really get it? You are not alone! This session will provide a total breakdown which has been tested to get the point across. This is a great session for all delegates, and is inclusive for all levels of decontamination scientists.


It will cover the apprenticeship programme for England and an update will be presented by the apprenticeship awarding body. There will be a presentation on how one department has implemented the apprentice training; this is a description of the practical steps that need to be undertaken. The presenters will be available for any questions in an open format at the end of this session. On Wednesday 29th November, there will be the IDSc Annual General Meeting which will be followed by a question and answer session so if you have any burning questions then please bring them to the session. It is your chance to have an open discussion with your colleagues on matters that are of concern.
