Procedure offered for common prostate condition The London Clinic is one of the first
hospitals in the UK to be treating patients with a new, pioneering procedure called prostate artery embolization for non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, a common condition in older men.
Healthcare founders among
‘50 most ambitious business leaders’ Dr Guy Braverman and Dr Allen Hanouka, the co-founders of GAMA Healthcare, have been named by LDC as one of the ‘50 most ambitious leaders’ in the UK. LDC, the Private Equity arm of Lloyds Bank, compiled the list of Britain’s leading entrepreneurs in partnership with The Telegraph. GAMA, a leading supplier of disinfectant wipes and infection prevention solutions to the NHS, has been one of the key drivers of improved infection rates in hospitals across the country. Guy and Allen founded GAMA in 2004, after meeting during their time in practice at the Royal Free Hospital. They developed a single universal disinfectant wipe that was effective on a range of healthcare acquired infections, at a time when it was traditional to use a two-step approach of first cleaning then disinfecting surfaces and equipment in hospitals. Since then, the business has grown rapidly, with more than 130 employees and a new £2.5 million R&D facility in Halifax, West
Yorkshire, under development. As well as being one of the largest suppliers to the NHS, the company’s products are increasingly sought overseas, now selling to 60 countries worldwide, particularly in China and Australia, where it has opened up offices and where much of the rapid growth in sales has arisen. Dr Guy Braverman, co-founder and managing director, said: “This has been a great year for GAMA, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our brilliant team, here in the UK and beyond. It is their commitment and drive which has got us into this market leading position, and I’m delighted to see that being recognised.”
Dr Allen Hanouka, co-founder and managing director, added: “The hard work, ingenuity and energy of the GAMA team has been the driving force of this rapid growth internationally, and I’m glad that this is being recognised with these awards.”
The procedure can be given under local anaesthetic as a day case, meaning patients can often go home quickly without having to be admitted to hospital. The procedure is spearheaded by The London Clinic’s world-renowned consultant urologist, Professor Prokar Dasgupta, and consultant endovascular radiologist, Dr Jocelyn Brookes. The London Clinic is one of the first hospitals in the UK to offer prostate artery embolization (PAE), a new procedure for non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. PAE has been available at The London Clinic since early 2018, providing relief for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). NICE recommended the treatment for use in the NHS in April this year.
Dr Brookes said:
“An increasing amount of men over 50 years are affected by benign prostatic hyperplasia and this results in many men having difficulty passing urine, often causing social embarrassment.”
