TRAINING & EDUCATION

working on the trial and the rigorous procedures that new treatments go through before they are allowed to progress to trials in NHS patients.”

“I’d recommend taking part in a clinical trial to any patient if they have the opportunity. I am living proof that for best patient care and outlook, treatment at an expert specialist, research active centre is crucial.” The opportunity to access new drugs, medical devices or diagnostics via a commercial trial doesn’t only have benefits to patients but also to NHS trusts and clinicians who have the opportunity to offer their patients the latest treatments. Professor Danson stated: “We believe that patients should be offered a clinical trial as part of their standard care in the NHS and, as I see patients in a research centre, it would be unusual for us not to offer trials to patients if that was a possible option for their condition. “Patients are very receptive to the idea of clinical trials and due to the nature of a randomised controlled trial, they are aware they may not be in the group of patients that receives the new drug but this does not put them off being open to the idea of a trial. Many patients participate, not only as a treatment option for themselves, but because feel they are contributing towards treatment options of the future - it’s commonly said by patients that this treatment might not help me but if it helps future generations receive better care, I will feel like I’m doing some good.”

In partnership with the NHS, the NIHR supported more than 1300 commercial research studies, which is an 11% rise on the previous year, and to achieve the 45% rise in patient recruitment

is an outstanding achievement. Matt Cooper, NIHR Clinical Research Network

That very powerful message is what motivates many doctors and nurses into supporting research studies and trials in the NHS. Offering clinical trials and studies to patients has benefits for the NHS trust also, and in the case of commercial research, the drugs or devices being tested as part of a clinical trial are supplied by the company sponsoring the trial and represent a saving to the resources and prescribing budgets in the NHS. In a report1 published by the NIHR CRN, NHS trusts in England were estimated to receive £6658 in revenue from life sciences companies for each patient recruited into commercial clinical research studies. At a time when NHS resources are stretched clinical research can make a valuable contribution to NHS trusts and the wider health economy.

The Government also sees life sciences research as a pivotal area for growth, as demonstrated in the NIHR CRN report2

which showed that the national NIHR CRN Portfolio of research was worth £2.4 billion to the UK economy.

In response to the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy3 - a report to the Government from the life sciences sector, the Government launched its Industrial Strategy white paper4 in November 2017. The life sciences industry plays a major part in the white paper, which highlights the great importance of a strong life sciences industry to the future of the UK’s economic success. A report published by PwC on The economic contribution of the UK Life Science Industry5 in March last year, determined the value added to the UK economy by the life sciences sector. As a major contributor to the UK economy and developer of life-saving and life-enhancing medicines to patients, the industry supports over 62,000 employees and it has the highest productivity rate of any high technology sector with exports worth £30 bn.
