STERILE SERVICES
Trusts – whatever a Trust needs we will work with them to help them.”
Increasing the reach within hospitals
On the back of this continued growth, the company’s main focus is to work across the whole of the hospital to see what savings can be offered in every department – rather than limiting its service to theatres. Phil explained: “We’re dedicated to working with Trusts, and hospitals are always looking for potential savings. The NHS needs to save money, and it certainly doesn’t want to compromise on quality. It also needs to have service levels that meet their demand, so we want to be able to make sure that we can do that. Unisurge’s primary product is bespoke procedure packs; these are built to a level that the customer requires. Customers will ask for packs with branded items as they are familiar items.“Over the years we’ve looked at the main components that go into the packs – such as drapes, swabs, instruments and gowns – and we now have our own versions which we’re buying in to ensure that we have exactly the same quality, the same size and the same performance as the branded products. What we also want to do is to ensure that we can offer savings to our customers across the UK.”
As an example, Unisurge now offers its own drapes, and ensures that the drapes are the same size and perform in the same way as a branded product. According to Phil, once a hospital has evaluated and tested it, they’ll discover that it’s a double saving because they can also put the drape onto the shelf as a sterile supplementary. The Signature surgical instrument range includes a broad spectrum of high quality single use instruments. Unisurge have invested in an instrument manufacturer who previously provided reusable instruments. Whilst some single use instruments vary in
quality. Unisurge have created a portfolio of products which replicate reusable items. They have the same weight, balance and performance that are required by end users. The products are designed to perform to the required level for all procedures
As one of the biggest provider of swabs in the UK, and having designed a Secure Swab, Unisurge offers an extensive range of gauze swabs and gauze products, available in both pre-packed sterile, double wrapped and bulk non-sterile versions. It has also launched its new Secure swab which is now stitched on three sides. This enables end users to open it and use it without the linting or fraying that could possibly impact a patient. The specialised swabs are available in white, blue and green, are 100% cotton and comply with EN14079.
Polyware production
As part of Unisurge’s expansion, the business now produces its own Polyware range.
As Phil Crook explained, before production started, the company took the time to speak to its customers. “One of the topics discussed was how people use a circular bowl at the moment,” he said. “We established that the two problematic factors were predominantly that decanting required squeezing the item to send the product out and this often resulted in cracking; and the quality of the plastic was such that they couldn’t see through it. “As a result, we introduced our own version - we still manufacture the circular version for customers. We also have a square version, so you can pour out fluid in a much more controlled way. “The other difference is that we use medical grade plastic, this gives a much improved quality that allows users to manage the fluid being placed in the polyware items.
Looking to the future
We want to work with hospitals across all departments. Previously we’ve focused very much on theatres, but we’re now looking
at all the other wards and departments. Phil Crook, director of sales, Unisurge International.

Going forward, Phil describes Unisurge as a company that is developing alongside hospitals. He noted: “What does a hospital need? It needs that cost saving, so we look at the components in a pack – we have developed our own versions, Unisurge have drapes, gowns, single use instruments, swabs, Polyware, and have now launched needles and syringes. Trusts are tasked with finding savings, they need to ensure that they maintain the quality, Unisurge ensure that the quality we buy is the same as the quality that they already have – if not better. “Hospitals also want to be compliant, which is a new challenge for the NHS, with the Department of Health setting up the towers and new expectations for Trust purchasing, all of our products are available via NHS Supply Chain and the new towers. “Hospitals are looking for a service level that allows them to receive products when they need them. Many Hospitals have seen storage space reduced over the last few years and delivery of products on time is vital to allow procedures to take place.
