10 QUESTIONS WITH... GARETH DAVID
Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Gareth David, Sales and Marketing Director, Scott Young Research.
Q6 Q7 Q1
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
I began working in the family business, a menswear retailer, when I was 14. I used to skip school because the shop paid better – don’t tell anyone though.

Q5
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?
By accident really! I’d had various retail jobs but wanted something with a company car. So in my early 20s I jumped at the chance of joining SYR as a sales rep. I got a red 1.6 Astra estate. It went down hills a lot faster than it went up.
WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR
PERSONALITY? Funny, focused and forgiving.
IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,
WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? Dubai – for the heat, and to experience the culture.
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING
INDUSTRY? I’d ensure that cleaners were taught better methods. Even the best equipment in the world won’t do the job well if it is not used correctly. Training is essential. That’s why at SYR we have our Taskforce team – part of their role is to train operatives in the use of equipment, so they will get the best out of it.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,
WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Work hard by getting to the detail. You will not learn sat in front of a PC, you need to get out there to experience what really happens at the sharp end.
IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD
YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? A very fast car – or two. Perhaps a couple of Lamborghini Gallardos, in different colours so people didn’t think I’d only got one car!
Q8
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE
ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? My Dad, as he died when I was very young and before he could purchase his first McDonalds in the early ‘80s.
Valentino Rossi – he’s a legend on two wheels. I’m an avid biker and own a couple of Ducati’s so we could take them for a spin.
The cleaner from my local school, who has worked there for the last 22 years. No-one even notices the hard work and dedication she has.
Q9
WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE
CLEANING INDUSTRY? I believe the future of cleaning is fully robotic as I don’t see how companies will be able to afford labour in a market that is struggling to make ends meet.
Graham Hunneman, Sales Director at Klenzan Christeyns, asks:
Q10
IF YOU COULD CREATE A DREAM TECHNOLOGY
SOLUTION FOR THE CLEANING INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Self-cleaning floors, although that would probably put us all out of business. They would have to work a lot better than some of the self- cleaning windows or ovens, though.
