COMMERCIAL CLEANLINESS

Cleaning expert Peter Hollier from home appliance manufacturer Vorwerk shares some advice on commercial floorcare and maintenance.

Flooring in the workplace becomes dirty and unhygienic much quicker than the flooring at home. There are many factors which cause this, from dirt brought inside from people’s shoes, to the countless amount of food and drink which is spilt on the floor.

All of this equates to the ideal breeding ground for bacteria, therefore it’s important that flooring is deep-cleaned thoroughly and regularly – whether you have a carpeted office or hard-wearing floor at your commercial base.

CARPET CLEANING Vacuuming your carpets regularly will result in the top layer of dust and grime being sucked out. However, you are leaving behind worn-in dirt and allergens that only a good deep clean can remove – which can’t be good for business when you’re trying to impress new clients or holding regular staff meetings.

In addition to regular vacuuming, carpets need a deep clean that will last in order to remove non-vacuumable grease and dirt that has become embedded in the fibres.

At Vorwerk, we believe that dry cleaning is the best solution for good quality carpets. We’d recommend using a powder-based cleaning agent that you sprinkle on the floor, massage in, and then vacuum away. It might take a little longer than other cleaning methods, but it will ensure you achieve the desired results without damaging the carpet in the process.

Vorwerk’s VF200 Carpet Freshener makes sure that carpets stay beautiful for longer with a hygienic in-depth clean. By using a non-toxic conditioning cleaner like Kobosan Active Dry Cleaning Power, that lifts allergens and makes the carpet soft and fluffy, you will notice the difference by sight and smell – and that’s sure to be a winner for your clients and customers.

DO NOT WET

CLEAN CARPETS Over time, the repeated wet cleaning of carpets can wash out wool’s natural waterproofing – resulting in the carpet acquiring a hard, crusty feel.

Water can also cause the carpet fibres to shrink and stretch and the dye to bleed, leaving a less-than-luxurious finish. Therefore, if you do need to use water to clean a carpet, it’s important you don’t use too much and you dry the carpet quickly.

It’s important you use an efficient vacuum cleaner, because if there’s any dirt nestled at the bottom of the carpet when you apply water, it will turn into a muddy pool that will eventually start to rot the base of the carpet and cause unpleasant smells as the bacteria gives off fumes.

HARD FLOORS When it comes to having wooden or laminate floors, the dangers are that using water, steam or liquid-based products to clean could cause the flooring to split and splinter over time. It’s really important to take care of wooden flooring, particularly hard wood as it’s expensive to replace.

The right kind of vacuum is needed to support this. The SP530 head on the Vorwerk Kobold VK200 is so popular for us because it has microfibre cloths suitable for all types – whether carpet, wooden, laminate or stone. It’s also complemented by two fast-drying cleaning solutions – particularly the Koboclean which suits parquet and laminate – that are designed to treat all flooring well. Our EB400 Automatic Electric Brush also detects floor types so it’s gentle, but thorough, in its cleaning ability. It also has rubberised wheels to prevent it from damaging floors.

I would always recommend having good quality flooring such as Karndean as – although expensive – it is built to last. For vinyl flooring, I would recommend vacuuming or brushing with a soft brush to remove any dirt which might lead to your floor being scratched. You should also regularly clean the floor with a neutral detergent.
