Q1

motor mechanic. I learnt on the job and grafted hard, but also got the chance to work with cars which are one of my biggest passions in life.

Q2 Q3

How did you get into the flooring industry?

I ended up in the flooring industry through family connections. My dad and brother were both in the industry and it seemed like a natural fit for me to follow in their footsteps.

What do you think are the positives and

negatives of the flooring trade? The positives of the trade are the people. I have met some really good friends whilst working in the industry and, luckily, have been able to work alongside a lot of them too. The negative is possibly that, because of the sometimes stubborn nature of the trade, it is sometimes difficult to push new and innovative products forward into the market.

Q4

If you could hire any one person to be part of your

team, who would it be and why? Duncan Bannatyne as he is an incredibly talented, very successful businessman with good ethics.

Q5

What’s the best advice you could

give to someone new coming

into the industry? The best advice I could give someone who is new to the flooring trade is to be enthusiastic, stay humble and be prepared to work your socks off.

Q6

If you could invent any product, what would it

be and why? It would be a completely dust-free grinding system, as it would create a much more efficient work environment for a company like Quest. It can get a bit dusty on site sometimes!

10 QUESTIONS WITH… Q7

What was your first job? My first job was working as a

If you could have a dinner party with any

three people, dead or alive,

who would they be and why? One of my biggest passions is motor racing so naturally the first would be the iconic racing driver, Ayrton Senna. The second would be my father, Alan Jones; a man who inspired me in so many ways and someone whom I greatly admire as a person. The third would be Bono from my favourite band, U2, as I think he could tell some interesting stories!

Q8

What do you think the future holds for

the flooring industry? I think the future of the industry is bright as long as the quality controls stay the same and the prices of products remain competitive. There will always be surfaces to maintain and floors to be laid.

Q9

What would you like to see in a future issue of

Tomorrow’s Contract Floors? I think more of the same really; good quality editorial about the industry, quality products and examples of fantastic workmanship.

Q10

Max Hoyle, Area Sales Manager -

Flooring, Bostik, asked: Besides magazines and traditional training courses, how can the best practice and knowledge be

shared within the industry? Personally, I think it is up to the company’s within the industry to step up and take responsibility for the newcomers to the trade and find new ways to share knowledge within the industry, such as apprenticeships.
