F. B-ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR

In order to be confident of a high-quality, professional finish in every flooring installation, contractors must take the time to assess which products are most appropriate and will

achieve long-lasting and aesthetically-pleasing results. When restoring an old amusement park, smoothing underlayment from F.Ball was used to provide the perfect foundations.

Certain types of subfloor will present particular challenges to flooring contractors, so it is important that the composition and condition of the subfloor is thoroughly assessed to avoid a substandard finish. That is why manufacturer of subfloor preparation products, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., have developed a comprehensive range of smoothing underlayments to provide an exceptional finish every time, even in the most challenging environments.

Such was the case in the refurbishment work carried out at Britain’s oldest amusement park, Dreamland, in Margate. Contractors from Hi-Spec Flooring used Stopgap Green Bag general purpose smoothing underlayment and Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane to create a high-quality floor finish in the retail area of the amusement park, ready for the installation of new Forbo linoleum floorcoverings.

Hi-Spec Flooring were contracted to refurbish the main retail area at Dreamland, comprising a number of shops selling Dreamland memorabilia and an arcade. Dated and in disrepair after years of neglect, the historic amusement park required a complete overhaul to bring it back to life and reinstate it as a place to be enjoyed by a modern-day audience, while remembering and paying homage to the rich history of the site. To be ready for the park’s re-launch, contractors were asked to complete the job as quickly as possible so that the retail area could open in time.

The finished floor has a major influence on the overall aesthetic appearance of an internal area and must deliver long- term durability, whilst accommodating

the expected foot traffic. This is particularly important in locations such as Dreamland, which are open to the public and are required to withstand heavy foot traffic on a daily basis. Therefore, contractors are not only expected to deliver speedy results, but must do so without compromising the quality of flooring projects.

Working to a strict deadline, it was vital that the products selected by contractors at Hi-Spec Flooring were capable of creating a smooth, long-lasting finish ahead of the re- opening of the amusement park. It was also important to ensure that the area would be accessible to the public immediately with no lingering, disruptive odours remaining once the park had opened.

With those criteria in mind, contractors selected Stopgap Green Bag smoothing underlayment and Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane. With a working time of 20 minutes and a walk-on hardness time of just 90 minutes, Stopgap Green Bag smoothing underlayment was chosen for its fast-setting and low- odour properties meaning that, once the installation was complete, the area could be re-opened and accessed immediately.

Stopgap Green Bag is a general purpose smoothing underlayment, suitable for use in light to heavy-duty applications and over a wide range of subfloor types. It has excellent self- smoothing properties, meaning that minimal work with a trowel is required. It is also protein-free, making it ideal for use in clinical or biologically-sensitive areas such as hospitals, laboratories and clean rooms.
