LEVEL-HEADED ADVICE
When laying a floor, it is essential that the surface is as smooth and even as possible. Norcros Adhesives, manufacturer and supplier of branded adhesives, grouts, surface
preparation and aftercare products, provides a guide to choosing the correct levelling compound/smoothing underlayment for the job…
Any newly-laid or screeded floor surface is likely to need levelling with the use of a self-levelling compound to ensure there is the lowest possible height variance in the floor. This is because floors, whether concrete or other material, are typically laid to fairly inaccurate tolerances. The leveller acts as an intermediate layer, which can then be tiled over, or any other type of floor covering can be applied.
If tiling on to concrete, the concrete must be at least six weeks old to enable movement, caused by drying shrinkage, to have taken place. It should be clean, dry and free from dust or contaminants which may act as a release agent and prevent the adhesive from bonding to the concrete.
Procedures vary for tiling on to cement/ sand screeds, anhydrite screeds, chipboard or over existing tiled surfaces.
When leveling impervious substrates, such as existing tile finishes, Norcros Key Bond Gritted Primer should first be applied. This is a ready-to-use, low

emission, film-forming, fast-drying modified styrene acrylic copolymer dispersion primer. The primer is suitable for use directly on to dense, non-absorbent smooth surfaces and epoxy and PU-based primers to provide a rough textured key for levelling compounds to bond to.
The newest addition to Norcros’ range is also its most environmentally friendly product yet. Norcros Pro 30 Fast Track Levelling Compound contains recycled crushed glass, which replaces quarried sand.
It is a flexible, single-part leveller that’s suitable for use from 2-30mm in a single application, without the need for additional aggregate. It is ready to tile after just 45 minutes, and can receive impervious floor coverings after 90 minutes, allowing early foot traffic and fast-track tile fixing.
The product is suitable for levelling a variety of substrates, including; concrete, cement/sand screed, flooring- grade asphalt, existing quarry and vinyl tiles, and overlaid timber floors.
Norcros Pro 30 Fast Track Eco is also suitable for encapsulating under-tile heating mats and cables, protecting the heating elements during the tile- fixing process as well as providing a level surface for tiling. It is suitable for use on timber floors which have been
