DESIGN AND DINE
In order to create a refreshed and contemporary new style without losing the authentic feel, Karndean Designflooring were called upon by contractors when replacing a floor that was half a century old.
When looking for an authentic design to replace a 50-year-old real wood parquet floor, the University of Worcester turned to no other than luxury vinyl flooring manufacturer, Karndean Designflooring, to do the job.
Located at its popular St John’s Campus, the university’s in-house estates team appointed Worcester Flooring Ltd to undertake the installation in the university’s main dining hall. Having previously been tasked with sanding and sealing the real wood parquet floor for the last 20 years, Worcester Flooring Ltd recommended Karndean in place of real wood.
Mark Evans, Head of Estate Services at the University of Worcester, said: “As we were responsible for replacing an original feature, we didn’t want to lose the look of real wood or striking parquet design.
“The team has successfully reinvented
the space and introduced a modern edge, whilst
maintaining a traditional herringbone design.”
“Both our dining room and reception were prone to scuffs and indentations from highheeled shoes so, with our new Karndean parquet floor, we’ll be able to easily maintain the floor and ensure it retains its beauty for longer.”
Home to over 10,000 students and 1,000 staff, the university was eager to keep the traditional look of parquet but also incorporate a modern and contemporary feel. Impressed with the intricate knots and realistic grains of Karndean’s Art Select Parquet, the university specified the golden hues of Auburn Oak Parquet in a classic herringbone design.

Matthew Speck, Head of Commercial Sales at Karndean Designflooring, said: “It would have been a real shame for the University of Worcester to lose the realistic look of wood parquet, especially as it has always been an established feature in their dining hall.
“With our Art Select Parquet, the university can reduce on-going maintenance costs and be confident that the floor will accommodate the regular, heavy traffic in this busy area.
“Importantly, the team has successfully reinvented the space and introduced a modern edge, whilst maintaining a traditional herringbone design.”
Available with a recently extended 20-year commercial guarantee, the complete Karndean Art Select Parquet collection features seven unique designs. From the pitch black hues and detailed grain of Black Oak Parquet to the understated golden tones of Morning Oak Parquet, there’s a design to suit both traditional and contemporary commercial spaces.
Gordon Bailey, Managing Director of Worcester Flooring Ltd, said: “Although it was a straightforward installation to begin with, we did face increasing time pressures in order to allow for internal decoration to get underway.
“By having four of our fitters on site for seven days straight, we managed to complete the installation, meaning no unexpected delays for our client.”
As part of an on-going refurbishment project, the university has also replaced dated terrazzo tiles and carpet in its main reception area and corridor with Karndean’s Art Select Blond Oak Parquet.
