any litter blackspots and some of the rubbish does build up, but we soon get on top of it where we need extra hands. The key areas visible to the public are always closely scrutinised by staff, but most of the work comes later in the evening to ensure that everything is cleared ready for the next day, and the cycle is then repeated.
But cleaning often varies with the nature of the event. We ran the Balmoral Show in May, and that was an entirely different kind of outside event compared to some of the large music festivals. That was a family event, a bit less demanding, but it kept us on our toes nonetheless.
For the popular Parklife music festival in Manchester, now in its fourth year, the venue switched from Platt Fields Park to Heaton Park, and attracted 50,000 revellers to see artists such as Rita Ora, Jessie Ware and Plan B. We cleaned all public areas including bars, catering outlets, toilet blocks, fun fair rides and car parks, completing a five-day site clean on the 600-acre site from the close of the event, to restore the Manchester Council-owned park back to its natural beauty. We also deployed a dedicated team to man the roads leading into the event, which were extremely busy due to it being just outside the city.
At the Hyde Park British Summertime Festival, things were very different. More than 65,000 music fans packed in each day for the weekend concerts, and thousands more during the week for different kinds of entertainment, with numerous food and drink festivals thrown in for good measure. And although the events were diverse, it didn’t really matter to us. Litter is litter.
We received the ultimate accolade on Twitter from festival-goers saying how clean the toilets were. Praise indeed; that sort of feedback is a true measure of our work from the people who pay their money to attend these shows. All this was unfolding before

our eyes as we re-grouped day after day, but we like a challenge and we apply our strict processes to make sure no stone is left unturned.
In all, Hyde Park covers 350 acres, and is home to a number of famous landmarks including the Serpentine Lake and Speakers' Corner. The park also offers various recreational activities, including open water swimming, boating, cycling, tennis and horse riding. Throughout the summer, event by event, we kept to tight processes which work.
We have not long been endorsed for our commitment to the Event Sustainability Management System ISO 20121, by the standards certification body, Certification Europe, and keeping to a structured work schedule helps us, particularly when we are working on this scale.

designed to help organisations in the events industry improve the sustainability of event-related products and services, leaving a positive legacy for the future.
This involved putting in place a specific, transparent process through which we can systematically identify the issues relevant to our operations, and set our own objectives and targets for improvement.
Once we had completed the last of the litter collections, we handed Hyde Park back with pride. As we went through the inventory covering the grounds, we were able to say that it had probably never looked so good. And that means another job well done.
Bring on the summer of 2014.
