the end of life cycle when the product is disposed of or recycled. This is not a self congratulatory industry scheme; the assessment is carried out by independent, qualifi ed scientists, involving both certifi cation and compliance, and as such is trusted by consumers and customers.

For Leonardo, to gain the certifi cation, the manufacturing process of certain key suppliers hade to be revised and refi ned to minimise environmental impact. For example, water is an essential requirement in paper manufacture and, as part of gaining the certifi cation, once used it is purifi ed to such an extent that, when it is pumped back into the river system, it is cleaner than when it came out!

Similarly, the de-watered sludge (which is generated when processing recovered paper) is spread on the land as fertiliser. Whilst currently plastics and the staples are sent to landfi ll, work is in progress that hopefully will result in landfi ll being but a memory in the not too distant future!

Transporting bulk loads inevitably means using lorries, but traffi c management systems have been introduced to minimise journey times and reduce potential traffi c congestion.

user, an average of fi ve sheets of hand towel or 75cm of roll towel is used to thoroughly dry hands. The temptation to take unnecessary extra armfuls of centrefeed dispensing or huge handfuls of C-fold towels disappears. Now that is making a signifi cant reduction in levels of waste.

saves time helps those cleaning staff to deal with any of the unforeseen problems more easily.

Seemingly, little things, such as the fact that Leonardo dispensers are translucent, mean that stock levels are easily monitored with the naked eye without the need to remove inspection plates or covers. This provides a major time saving benefi t. Having already mentioned the advantages of the twin roll system, the recent introduction of higher capacity dispensers has further enhanced the sustainability proposition by

reducing the number Equally, the fact that

Being awarded the Ecolabel, means that the whole lifecycle of the product has to be assessed.

So, it’s more than just trees! However, this is not yet the end of the sustainability spectrum; wastage is another key component. Though technically outside of the Ecolabel remit, Leonardo is long committed to cutting unnecessary waste. The dispensers are among the most modern available and are themselves recyclable, but it is their inherent design characteristics that contribute further to sustainability. there are twin rolls means that only completely exhausted stub rolls are being replaced, as opposed to the part used rolls. That’s because when janitorial services monitor levels, they naturally err on the side of caution, and replace part used rolls rather than risk the washroom having empty dispensers. With the Leonardo washroom system there is no such risk, so wastage is again almost eliminated from that source.

Thinking more widely, wastage not only applies to material usage; there is the wastage of time. For those teams of cleaners

who have to deal with uneven levels of washroom usage, there is often a tight window of opportunity available between the usage peaks and troughs. Many leisure venues are generally quiet during the scheduled activity, with peaks between the events. This means that washrooms need to be inspected, monitored and cleaned in relatively restricted time slots if standards are to be maintained throughout the programme. So anything that

of monitoring visits that are required. The resulting lower number of scheduled checks clearly saves even more time, and allows the cleaning staff to prioritise the other aspects of the job, hopefully then delivering more consistent hygiene and cleanliness standards.

For Leonardo, sustainability has becomes less of a mantra and more of a way of life, or more appropriately, a way of doing business. Corporate social responsibility is promoted by Ecolabel, and though the certifi cation only applies to Leonardo tissue at present, it is worth noting that Leonardo foam soap has not been tested on animals, is bio-degradable, and of a thinner consistency than liquid soaps, so it is less likely to clog drains. Finally, it has been developed from renewable sources: sustainable strategies with no reduction in quality. Perhaps it’s not so far from the Eco Centre ambitions after all.
