ECOLABEL - More Than Just Saving Trees
Connect Hygiene describes how their decade-long relationship with Leonardo has allowed for the successful development of sustainable washroom systems, and the award of an Ecolabel is the proof of it.
Whilst the news regularly highlights the illegal logging activities in the Amazon basin, and more recently in the Congo, not all timber is destined to be made into paper. Most trees that feed the paper industry are from extremely well managed and renewable forest estates, frequently lauded for their all round environmental and socially responsible practices. So the decision to offer the option of
supplying Leonardo dispensers with Ecolabel accredited paper, is the result of a much wider based interpretation of sustainability.
Europe’s largest timber framed, straw bale clad building, is home to the administrative offi ces of York City Council’s Neighbourhood Services, and it will come as little surprise that all their hand towel and toilet tissue requirements are
stipulated as having to be sourced from recycled paper. Known as the Eco Depot, it is pioneering the concept of environmental sustainability without compromising quality. It includes wastage, the effi ciency of the cleaning teams, the manufacturing process itself and of course, social responsibility.
The diffi culty is perhaps that not all businesses and organisations can even dream of matching the efforts of the Eco Centre. However, that does not mean that the adoption of a less ambitious sustainable strategy, within its wider defi nition, is not capable of supplying a valuable contribution towards making the planet a nicer place to live, as well as making substantial cost savings!
Being awarded the Ecolabel, means that the whole lifecycle of the product has to be assessed. For Leonardo, it begins with trees or recycled paper, through the manufacturing process, packaging and distribution and on to
