Happy Birthday To Us!
Tomorrow’s Cleaning turns four this issue, so we’d like to take a couple of pages to look back over the last year at some of the most memorable stories we’ve covered...
“What’s the problem?” It may be a year old, but this story on what’s
‘adequate’ and what’s not when it comes to washroom facilities, really stood out for us. The Deb Group laid down the law when it came to maintaining good hand hygiene, revealing the shocking fi gure that one in fi ve people have unwashed hands. What products can you source to promote regular use? Should hand sanitisers be introduced as part of regular washroom regimes? Take a look at our previous issue to fi nd out the answers.
Click here “Festive fl aws on your
commercial fl oors?” This piece was a great way of discussing the problems and solutions afforded to the hordes of people winging their way through the streets and onto your fl oors. Loose needles from fresh pine trees, wine spills from the offi ce Christmas party, or that horrible sludge left over from snowy downpours: what is the best advice? Alan Lewin, Business Development Manager of ServiceMaster Clean, provides you with some top tips.

“Now Showing: Pride” This piece is a delight, and demonstrated the
enormous creativity which can be displayed in the cleaning industry. It highlighted the importance of every person, every toilet roll and every wipe that is involved. We thought it only right to include this piece as the highlight of the April issue, to show our own pride in what we do.
Your turn to watch...
I hope you enjoyed your own special screening now – make sure you watch it, if you haven't already, it’s just five minutes long and I guarantee you’ll enjoy it. I’d love to know your thoughts, so tweet me, @TomoCleaning, and let me know what you think?
Tomorrow’s Cleaning Editor, Charlotte Taylor, reports back on an industry fi rst – a fantastic fi lm, from ESP.
It’s not often that you associate the cleaning industry with anything glamorous – in fact, I’d go as far as to say that it’s very rare indeed. So when I received a lovely invite in the post, inviting me to ESP’s film premiere, I was a bit taken aback, I must admit!
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting - perhaps a promotional company video? Something I had seen before? This is no bad reflection on ESP, more just the natural expectation of company films – they never seem to be different, do they? But I was wrong on all accounts this time around.

When my colleague, Gavin and I pulled up outside The Electric in Birmingham, the UK's oldest working cinema, I felt like we had stepped back in time a little. I looked down at my dress and wished I’d gone for something a little more 40’s, with some victory rolls in my hair and a red lip. Guests lined up on the

red carpet and had their photograph taken by the paps and then we were welcomed inside and met with drinks on the house, including a specially made cocktail that was a lovely ESP blue, as well as some yummy canapés.
Left to circulate and chat, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, especially after a busy first day at The Cleaning Show. Suddenly those cinema lights dimmed and we all rushed to find ourselves a seat. The evening began with an opening speech from our MC of the evening, ESP’s Sales Director, Martin Kent, who should definitely consider some stage work as he didn’t half make us laugh! He introduced the screening of the ESP System Dispenser video, which you can view here. The video explained how the enigma dispensers work and how it is possible to save up to 40% of paper usage compared to centrefeed rolls and c-fold towels. And while

this wasn’t the main event, I have to say that it made training seem a little more ‘normal’ and it was presented in a real way, without the forced smiles and the bad acting.
And then, the lights dimmed yet again, and we settled into our seats to watch Pride. And I was, without sounding dramatic, blown away. Pride is a promotional drama that depicts Daniel’s (a new ESP employee) journey from “just packing boxes” to “making a difference” to people’s lives, without even realising it. I loved the opening sequence, following a hand towels journey from start to finish (a process I’ve always found interesting), where it ends up in Daniel’s hand as he looks round in confusion at his new place of work.
The film was very honest and humorous in parts, especially on Charlie (the ESP guru’s) part. He educated Daniel on what it meant to work in ESP – and where the “tissues”, that Daniel originally scorns at, eventually end up – like the Malvern Community Hospital’s Maternity Unit. Through the drama, Daniel
learns about the quality of the products he makes, how the products are used and the philosophy behind ESP.
But for me, it was more than that. Too often, the cleaning industry is made out to be the lowest of the low. After all, “we just clean.” But that’s not all. Not at all. The cleaning industry makes a difference in so many more ways than one – it prevents the spread of disease, it keeps the world around us safer, it even provides the all-important tissue to wipe your face when you cry.
And Pride really captured that. After a big round of applause and a moment to gather our thoughts and talk about the film (and top up our glasses!), guests were treated to two great comedians – Adam Bloom and John Moloney and musican Andy Jeffs. It was a brilliant night and I’m sure fellow guests will join me in thanking both Martin, and Stephanie, of ESP, for making us feel so welcome.

“Our time to Shine” The Olympics was a proud moment for everyone
in the UK, so it seemed only right to include this story from Ceris Burns International, on how we can build a lasting legacy of Olympic performance throughout all our industries. “Multi-facility construction projects at the Olympic park and village are landmark FM projects, and thousands of staff across the cleaning and waste management sector were a critical element in making London 2012 a success” – we couldn’t have put it better ourselves.
Click here “Is going bin-less really a load
of rubbish?” This was all about the bin debate, and whether going bin-less in your establishment would really reduce waste or just prove to be fruitless. We turned to the case study of Chichester College, who think Nviro show the way forward. We thought this would be the perfect story to further fuel the sustainability argument, as the College managed zero landfi ll waste with their help. If an establishment as large as Chichester College can achieve such a thing, it is surely something every business can aspire to.

“Do you understand the web?” This is something every business needs, even
if its new-fangled ways are not something every business wants. Another example of how the cleaning industry is constantly evolving and developing new lines of communication, we thought this piece on utilising the web was a must-read. Search engines alone can hugely improve the amount of traffi c your site receives, so it’s worth learning how they work, not to mention getting the edge over the competition.
