Premiere Cleaning Academy

Matt Baines discusses the future of the Premiere Cleaning Academy, after its new rebranding.

An inherent determination runs through Premiere to strive for continuous

improvement in all areas. In 2011, every single employee passed the City and Guilds NVQ Level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques, and adopted a raft of LEAN practices across manufacturing, product development, administration and sales.

The launch of the rebranded Premiere Cleaning Academy brings a new corporate look and feel, that works in harmony with the rebrand of the Premiere Group as a whole. In the true spirit of continuous improvement, we identified City and Guilds as being the best and most obvious choice for us given their heritage, universal recognisability, breadth of offering and ability to facilitate meaningful learner development.

Barbara Ellul, City and Guilds Senior Portfolio Advisor for Built Environment Services, has been present throughout the whole rebrand. She said: “City and Guilds are the leading organisation in the development and accreditation of cleaning and facilities qualifications. We are pleased to welcome the professional and committed staff at the Premiere Cleaning Academy as an accredited centre, and our good wishes to a successful launch and partnership moving forward.”

But the process of re-birth for the Premiere Cleaning Academy has

certainly given me pause for thought around some of the more difficult issues that affect our industry...

Why is cleaning looked upon

as an unskilled occupation? In my opinion, those individuals representing the wishes and needs of our industry's clients are, by and large, unaware of the complexity and technicality of modern cleaning service provision.

What do our industry's customers know (and why would they know) of the importance of understanding cleaning chemical pH values, understanding the difference between one floor type and another, or why microfibre cleaning may be better for certain environments than conventional cloths and mops (or vice versa)?

There seems to be a commonly held misconception that, because cleaning is something the vast majority of the nation's population carry out in their own homes, it therefore follows that anyone can clean professionally. Those who have worked at any level in our industry for a period of time, will know that this is quite simply not true.

What can we do as an industry

to change this mentality? We must use training and education to change this perception in a two- pronged approach:

1. Continue to increase the level of training carried out for cleaning staff. The virtues of comprehensive training have been widely talked and written about, and as an industry we now recognise, more

than ever before, that training staff improves morale, results in a reduction in the occurrence of workplace accidents, reduces the level of supervision required and increases productivity.

2. There is an obvious requirement to include the customers of cleaning service providers in the education we provide, as a route to communicating some of the complexity inherent in modern commercial cleaning. The end goal being improved understanding and a bit more give and take in the service provider / client relationship.

I am convinced of the absolute necessity for training and educational opportunities, which offer the chance for real development, and meet the needs of the individual, as opposed to the 'one size fits all' approach.

It is the intention of the Premiere Cleaning Academy to launch a select range of City and Guilds qualifications:

• Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 Awards in Practical Cleaning Skills (7139)

• Level 1 Award - Introduction to the Facilities Industry (7612)

• Level 1 Award - Environmental Awareness (7530-01)

However, it is our long-term plan to develop a portfolio of qualifications that enable true individual development and professional growth.
