early childhood education
thrilled to learn how to more effectively and imaginatively incorporate music and movement into their programs.
Finally, some general music educators are less comfortable with their lower elemen- tary classes and are reticent to ask for or not sure where to go for help. Establishing a sequential approach to music instruction is crucial at the early childhood level, yet takes years of study and practice to successfully implement. I have spent my career exploring different approaches to teaching early childhood music by attend- ing workshops, earning certifications, and learning from colleagues. When I found myself in a general music classroom with little idea of what I was doing, the best decision I made was to ask other teach- ers for help. They were always willing to mentor me, and as a result, I have formed incredible relationships with my colleagues and, thanks to their guidance, grown tremendously as an educator.
The following are organizations in and out of Wisconsin that are excellent early childhood resources. You likely know about and are affiliated with some, so I would encourage you to investigate something new:
The Association of Wisconsin Area Kodály Educators:

Orff-Schulwerk:

Early Childhood Music and Move- ment Association:

Music Learning Theory:

WMEA summer workshops focused on early childhood (announced in spring):

I would love to hear about how you are promoting early childhood music educa- tion in your school and community and what you would like to see in future WSM publications pertaining to early childhood music education. It is truly an honor to as- sume the early childhood education chair for WMEA and I am looking forward to collaborating with you to further music education for our littlest learners.
