WSMA Festival News x

2017–18 WSMA Festival Rules and Information Revisions

Each year WSMA Festivals Committee members review festival rules and infor- mation based on feedback from WSMA member school teachers and the desire to continue to improve how the organization is able to serve students. Discussion and suggested revisions are refined to a pro- posal that is recommended to the WSMA Board of Directors for approval.

On a yearly basis, WSMA will continue to review and revise this information utiliz- ing the Festivals Committee format. The teachers that serve on this committee are a reflection of the entire state of Wisconsin and the service provided is appreciated. It is also encouraged that teachers share ideas with members of this committee or with WSMA staff to continue the growth of the festival experience. If you are in- terested in serving a three-year term as a member of the Festival Committee, please contact WSMA.

Revisions to WSMA Festival Rules and Event Headers include: Events 1311 – Music Theater – Soprano/ Alto Solo and 1321 – Music Theater – Tenor/Bass Solo

In order to better communicate that these lists are voice type/tessitura specific rather than gender specific, the titles have been changed. Students should perform from whichever list best fits his/her range and tessitura.

NEW Events 6258 – SSA/A Contempo- rary A Capella, 6268 – TTB/B Contem- porary A Cappella and 6278 – Mixed Contemporary A Capella.

In order to accommodate the growing interest and demand for contemporary a cappella, these are being added for WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival. All three are Class A or B only events. Amplification is permissible but not provided by the

18

festival manager and stylistic choices that differ from the score are permissible. Please refer to the event header for ad- ditional rules and information.

NEW Events 6468 - Jazz Combo and 6478 - Creative Jazz Combo:

These events replace the previous single event 6448 – Jazz Improvisation Combo. The two new events have a few differ- ences, with the main one being whether the students must create their own in- troduction and coda. Please refer to the event headings for the specific differences between the events. This change was done in order to better accommodate the differ- ences between the types of music on the former list.

School Solo & Ensemble Festival Eligi- bility Requirements – Rule III.A.:

WSMA has removed the concert eligibil- ity rules that were previously attached to Solo & Ensemble Festival participation. All schools can participate in Solo & Ensemble regardless of Concert Festival participation. WSMA will instead be of- fering an opportunity to become a WSMA Accredited School for those schools who meet basic requirements including yearly Concert Festival and Solo & Ensemble Festival participation.

Student Participation in Ensembles – Rule V.C.3.:

In order to provide greater flexibility and opportunity to students performing in ensembles as well as increased discre- tion to teachers, students from multiple member schools may form co-op regular or special ensembles. (This is no longer limited to just siblings.) Rule V.C.3 has been changed to read: Students performing together in a Regular or Special Ensemble may be from multiple schools. A co-op ensemble request form still needs to be filled out by the member school teachers. In order for students to participate in a

co-op ensemble, all participating students must attend WSMA member schools or be registered as non-WSMA participants. In addition, all member school teachers of participating students must approve of the formation of the ensemble.

Commonly Misunderstood Items:

Permissions and Transfers:

Permission is required to perform a selec- tion that is not anywhere else on the cur- rent WSMA Festival Music List. In order to apply for permission, the event header of the specified event must indicate that permission is allowed. If permission is not allowed for the event then something from that event list must be performed. Transfers refer to a selection that is on the current WSMA Festival Music List but is not listed under the event that is being performed. In order to transfer a selection, the event must indicate that transfer is al- lowed. WSMA permission is not required for any transfers.

Public Domain Music:

If the Public Domain edition is the same edition that is on the WSMA Festival Music List, it may be used for the adjudi- cator. If the Public Domain edition is not the same, but the music itself is the same, the teacher must submit the music for an Alternate Edition Permission. The permis- sion form must accompany the adjudica- tor music in order for the performance to receive a rating.

Rules for Events:

Rules for every event are found in two separate places and both are important. The Festival Rules and Information docu- ment contains general festival rules that apply to all events. The Event Headers (found in the WSMA Festival Music List under each event) contain rules specific to that event.
