6. WSMA will develop workshops and meetings for decision-makers designed to demonstrate the value of WSMA programs and services (i.e., what workshops and meet- ings could WSMA create that are specifically designed to promote the value of student participation in WSMA programs and services to school and community decision- makers?).
7. WSMA will explore expansion of promotional resources for external entities that demonstrate the value of WSMA programs and services (i.e., in what ways could WSMA expand its promotional resources to communicate the value of student participation in WSMA programs and services to educational support entities?).
The third strategy, WSMA will ensure continuous operational stability, chal- lenges WSMA to be a professionally and fiscally stable organization. WSMA experienced some operational instability in staffing and fiscal operations in the first decade or so of the current millen- nium, which it has overcome over the last few years. This third strategy includes seven action steps designed to ensure that WSMA operational stability remains strong and secure:
1. WSMA will develop an execu- tive director transition plan (i.e., WSMA needs to be prepared in the event of the absence or resignation of its executive director).
2. WSMA will develop a transition plan for all staff positions (i.e., WSMA needs to be prepared in the event of the absence or resigna- tion of any member of the WSMA staff).
3. Professional growth opportunities will be provided for WSMA staff members (i.e., WSMA needs to ensure that every staff member is a statewide leader in the professional services they provide to WSMA).
10
4. WSMA staff will engage in ongo- ing team-building initiatives (i.e., the WSMA staff needs to remain a cohesive and collaborative team of professionals dedicated to mission and vision of WSMA programs and services).
5. Association finances will reflect best practices of non-profit orga- nizations (i.e., WSMA needs to be a good steward of association resources).
6. Learning opportunities on fiscal governance will be made available (i.e., the WSMA Board of Direc- tors and staff need to know how to be good stewards of association resources).
7. WSMA will explore opportuni- ties for increasing revenue sources (e.g., currently, WSMA primar- ily depends upon the resources that come from member schools through dues and program par- ticipation fees; what other revenue resources could WSMA obtain to maintain or even decrease the resources it depends upon from members schools?).
The 2017-2021 WSMA Strategic Plan is rigorous and lofty, but is designed to keep WSMA strong and relevant to the needs of its membership and the students and teachers it serves. It also calls for WSMA to work to be a statewide-recognized professional organization that is fiscally prudent. WSMA is eager to begin work on this strategic plan and welcomes your ideas and thoughts regarding execution of this work. I look forward to any feedback you wish to provide.
On another note, planning for the 2017 Wisconsin State Music Conference, Well- Rounded With Music, is well underway. Once again there will be a significant number of sessions tailored to coincide with the educational initiatives occurring in Wisconsin school districts. There will be several sessions available to attendees that focus on the following topics and
how they look and feel in music education classrooms:
• Educator Effectiveness • Literacy • Authentic Assessment • Developing SLO’s • Use of Technology • PDP Development • RtI • 1:1 Computing • And Much More!
The 2017 Wisconsin State Music Confer- ence is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25 through Saturday, October 28. A letter of support for you to attend this year’s Wisconsin State Music Conference was sent to Wisconsin administrators last spring by WSMA President, Dr. Jon B. Gilliland. You may access this letter by visiting the Attendee Resources section of the Wisconsin State Music Conference webpages (
wmeamusic.org/conference). As you make plans for attendance to this year’s conference, you may wish to review that letter and this article with your build- ing principal and/or superintendent. We hope to see you at the Wisconsin State Music Conference this fall!
In closing, I want to remind you that as executive director of WSMA, WMEA and WFSM, I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility to meet the needs of Wisconsin schools, music educators and the students they serve. As such, do not hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and ideas on how the associations and foundation might further develop our partnership with you. Know I am just a telephone call or email away. Better yet, the next time you are in the Madison area, make a stop in Waunakee and visit with me personally at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education! My best to you for a great school year!
