from the desk of the executive director WSMA 2017-2021 Strategic Plan:

New Directions to Better Serve You! Timothy J. Schaid, Executive Director

By the time this is- sue of Wisconsin School Musician (WSM) reaches you, most of you will be well into the first few weeks of the 2017- 18 school year! All of us at WSMA wish you and your stu-

dents the best as you work to provide them with a high quality music education.

Over the past year, the WSMA Board and staff have been hard at work developing a new strategic plan for the association. In December 2016 a sub-committee of the board, select WSMA staff and two indi- viduals who were familiar with WSMA but not affiliated with the board, staff or the behind-the-scene intricacies of WSMA operations, met for a day and a half with a strategic plan facilitator to begin work on developing a new strategic plan for WSMA. The outcomes of this initial strategic planning meeting were three new strategic directions for WSMA:

1. WSMA will increase membership and program participation in our ongoing mission to ensure all stu- dents have access to engaging and enriching music opportunities.

2. WSMA will increase awareness and recognized value of WSMA programs and services among school and community.

3. WSMA will ensure continuous operational stability.

From January through May 2017, select members of the WSMA staff met regu- larly to flesh out the action plans for each strategic direction, which were reviewed by the full WSMA strategic planning sub- committee last June. As I write this article,

the WSMA Board of Directors has not officially approved the strategic plan but is expected to do so later this summer.

What follows is a general description of the action plan for each of the strategic directions of the WSMA strategic plan. You will note from the title of this article that the new strategic plan is a four-year plan that is anticipated to be completed by June 2021. As with any strategic plan, modifications to the timelines embedded in the plan may need to be considered as some of the action plans may not take as much time as originally expected and other action plans may require more time than initially anticipated. Nevertheless, June 2021 is the target date for completion of the strategic plan.

The first strategy, WSMA will increase membership and program participation in our ongoing mission to ensure all students have access to engaging and enriching mu- sic opportunities, seeks to increase WSMA membership and program participation. To do this, the strategic plan calls for six specific action steps that WSMA will undergo over the next four years:

1. WSMA will explore alternative membership dues structures (i.e., is there a different way to approach WSMA memberships to reduce costs and not limit memberships to just schools?).

2. WSMA will reevaluate outreach marketing to maintain current and solicit new members (i.e., can WSMA change the way it markets the value of WSMA programs and services to increase membership?).

3. WSMA will research the needs of current and future member schools (i.e., is WSMA meeting the needs of its member schools and if not, what changes can WSMA make to meet those needs?).

“WSMA is eager to begin work on this strategic plan and welcomes your ideas and thoughts

regarding execution of this work.”

4. WSMA will explore new programs and services (i.e., are current WSMA programs and services meeting the needs of students and teachers and if not, what new WSMA programs and services can be developed to meet those needs?).

5. WSMA will develop outreach- marketing strategies that target not only member school teachers, but also students, parents and studio teachers (i.e., how can WSMA do a better of job of marketing current and future WSMA programs and services to a larger audience?).

6. WSMA will evaluate existing programs and services to ensure relevance and effectiveness (i.e., are there aspects of current WSMA programs and services that are no longer relevant or effective and if so, what changes could be made to ensure relevance and effectiveness of WSMA programs and services?).
