Wisconsin’s Treasure at Forty CMP Marks a Milestone Randal Swiggum, CMP Committee Member
On a beautiful July night, in a stunning glass-walled room overlooking Lake Michigan, music teachers gathered for a grand party. The occasion? The 40th
anni-
versary of the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance (CMP) Project, the oldest and longest-running mu- sic education initiative in the nation.
The gala was part of this summer’s annual CMP Workshop (also in its 40th
year) and
was hosted by Concordia University in Mequon, with Marcy Russell and Randy Swiggum as organizers. The party in- cluded music teachers in the middle of their first CMP workshop and teachers back immersing themselves in CMP for the third or tenth time. Former CMP proj- ect leaders came together from all over
Wisconsin, and members of the Illinois CMP Project also made the trip.
But the real celebrities of the evening were four of the original “inventors” of the CMP model – founders Michael
George, Jeanne Julseth, Will Schmid and Jan Tweed. The audience hung on their every word, as they regaled the guests with stories of the summer of 1977 and the very beginnings of the CMP way of thinking. The audience laughed, wiped
