Standards Revision Committee decided to include a new strand in the 2017 WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards: Secondary General Mu- sic. The Secondary General Music strand is formatted based on Artistic Processes (creating, performing, responding, and connecting). The standards within this strand are categorized by (a) ensemble, (b) technology, (c) instrumental and vocal, and (d) composition and theory; these four categories – and the standards within – align with the 2014 National Core Music Standards, but this information has now been consolidated into one easily-assessable document.
Connecting When examining the artistic process Con- necting within the 2014 National Core Music Standards, one will notice that there are only two performance standards that are unique to the category Connecting. Connecting #10 includes: demonstrate how interests, knowledge and skills re- late to personal choices and intent when creating, performing and responding to music, and Connecting #11 includes: demonstrate understanding of relation- ships between music and the other arts, other disciplines, varied contexts and daily life. The remaining performance standards listed within Connecting are duplicates of the standards already included within Creating, Performing and Responding.
In contrast, the 2017 WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards include a more diverse
approach, with six standards that are unique to the category Connecting. Within the categories Personalize and Broaden (descriptors that replace national labels #10 and #11), we have expanded the original two Connecting standards (see below) to include Personal Connections, Academic Connections and Human Con- nections. In addition, we have included new standards based on Literacy Connec- tions, Affective Connections and Musical Connections. We believe these changes add strength and breadth to the standards in a way that better meets the needs of Wisconsin music educators.
Numeric Identifiers Two minor changes have been instituted with regard to the numeric identifiers associated with individual performance standards. First, in comparison to the 2014 National Core Music Standards, the numeric identifiers within the 2017 WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards have been moved to the bottom-right corner of each box, which gets them out of the way of the standards verbiage. Second, performance standards that are unique to Wisconsin or have been edited in some way include - WI as the final characters (see “Broaden” example, next column).
Technology Finally, our committee is currently working to broaden the Music Tech- nology strand in ways that reflect the continually-evolving impact that technology has on music education. These changes will be shared on the WMEA website once they are ready for public distribution.

The members of the Wisconsin Music Standards Revision Committee are excited to see how Wisconsin music educators will put the 2017 WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards to use. We hope that the changes we have made to the 2014 National Core Music Standards, both in terms of format- ting and content, will be helpful to educa- tors across our state.
We believe that, as our mission statement suggests, these new standards truly are Meaningful Guidelines to Inspire Great Music Education. On, Wisconsin!
