student composition project
Student Composers Honored Victoria Donahue, Program Director
The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages and recognizes the efforts of Wisconsin’s student composers. This year a total of 75 submissions were received for the project with 43 submissions in the High School Division (grades 9–12) and 32 in the Middle School Division (grades 5–8). 8 submissions received Honorable Mention distinctions and 20 students received awards based on merit in nine different categories.
The Student Composition Project provides student composers the opportunity to receive feedback regarding the positive qualities of his/her piece as well as provide ways to improve as a composer in the fu- ture. Each submission is reviewed and re- ceives a written critique by a professional composer from the state of Wisconsin. Reviewers determine awards and winners. Division winners receive a scholarship to study composition.
Awards were presented at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee on Saturday, June 3 during the Awards Reception.
