WMEA News Kati Seiter, WMEA President-Elect NAfME National Assembly

WMEA President Lynn Seidl, WMEA President-Elect Kati Seiter, WMEA Past-President Jim Scheuer and NAfME North Central Division President Leyla Sanyer attended the NAfME National Assembly in Washington, D.C. June 28-July 1. Thurs- day, June 29 was spent on Capitol Hill as 300 music educators and over 100 college students from across the United States visited with legislators from their states. The Wisconsin leader- ship team visited the offices of Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson, and Representatives Mark Pocan, Mark Gallagher, Glenn Grothman, Ron Kind and Sean Duffy. The WMEA leader- ship team was joined by Wisconsin NAfME-Collegiate member Susan Kilian of UW-River Falls.

Our “ask” when speaking with our legislators was to:

• Support access to music education as part of a well- rounded education by fully funding Title IV, Part A ($1.60 Billion Request)

• Support access to music education for the most disadvantaged students by fully funding Title I, Part A ($15.46 Billion Request)

• Support professional development for music educators by fully funding Title I, Part A, Title II Part A, and Title IV Part A & F ($2.29 Billion Request-Title II-A, $27 million-Title IV-F)

Now that music is enumerated as part of a “well-rounded edu- cation” in ESSA, opportunities for supporting access to music education at the state and local levels are evident. It is important that Congress do all that it can to prioritize ESSA funding.

We also thanked them for voting in favor of the ESSA as all Wisconsin senators and representatives voted “yes,” showing their dedication to a well-rounded education.

Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1 were spent in Tyson’s Corners, Virginia attending seminars, breakout sessions, the North Central Division meeting and our National Assembly. Representatives from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Europe MEA attended.

The Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education (WAME) com- mittee met in July to discuss February Drive-In Day as well as the upcoming Drive-In Day on February 7, 2018. Music educators, parents, music businesses and more are invited to come to Madison to meet with Wisconsin state senators and representatives about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Meeting with legislators can seem intimidating at first, but you are simply having a conversation with them about something you are passionate about. It is important to remember that you are the expert who is educating your legislators. Please watch
