2017 WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards


These specific learning targets are often referenced within lesson plans and curriculum guides. Perfor- mance standards are listed on the standards maps along with their numeric identifiers, which match the numeric identifiers on the national standards (e.g., Compare the structure of contrasting pieces of music selected for performance, explaining how the elements of music are used in each. MU:Pr4.2.8a).


Standards Maps The 2017 WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards have been formatted and presented in two ways. First, each strand is presented either by grade level (general music strands) or level of proficiency (all remaining strands). Second, each strand is presented based on artistic processes (creating, performing, responding and connecting). In both cases, the standards maps include the use of color coding for visual clarity.


Both formats are available on the WMEA website (wmeamusic.org/standards/maps) as downloadable PDFs, designed for printing on 11 x 17 paper. Music educators are encouraged to utilize the format that best meets their needs.


Changes from the 2014 National Core Music Standards Whereas the 2017 WMEA Wisconsin Music Stan- dards represent a broad-scale adoption of the 2014 National Core Music Standards, there are some notable changes of which Wisconsin music educa- tors should be aware. These changes are described below.


Formatting The most obvious difference between the national and state standards is the formatting. The Wisconsin Standards Revision Committee aspired to create user- friendly documents for Wisconsin music educators, thus making the standards practical and accessible. We believe that our color-coded documents, which are organized by artistic processes as well as grade level or level of profi- ciency and presented as comprehen- sive maps to be printed on 11 x 17 paper, have realized that goal.
