tri-m music honor society The Future of Music Education…
Is Sitting Right in Front of You Mark Lakmann, WMEA State Chair, Tri-M Music Honor Society
Advocating for your music program is impor tant now, more than ever. It is crucial to remind students, parents, administrators and the general public that studying music is an essential com-
ponent to a well-rounded education. But have you thought about the big picture? How can we have an impact on increasing the number of students who go into music education? What can we do to advocate for our profession of music education?
There is no doubt that we are facing a historic teacher shortage in all subject areas, particularly music. It is not enough that we maintain and build our own music programs. We must begin to take respon- sibility for actively searching out and encouraging students to become the next generation of music educators. What can you do?
Continue your membership in WMEA and NAfME and encourage colleagues to join. As a member of these organizations, you can learn about ways to support music education on the state and national level. Attend the Wisconsin State Music Confer- ence and other local or national confer- ences to continue learning about ways to foster future music educators.
Attend the Wisconsin Advocates for Mu- sic Education (WAME) meetings. WAME is the voice of music advocacy in Wiscon- sin and consists of community members, parents, educators and music industry members who all help our political leaders understand that a quality music education is essential for all students. Encourage and promote your juniors and seniors to attend the Aspiring Music Majors Day on Friday, October 27, at the Wisconsin State Music Conference. This special one-day program will give your juniors and seniors an immersion into the world of music and music edu- cation through attendance at conference sessions, performances and exhibits. Go to
wmeamusic.org/conference/aspiring- music-majors-program.
Your encouragement and support of music students today will lay the groundwork for the future of our music education profes- sion. It’s exciting to know that we have a direct impact on shaping this future. Let’s continue to advocate for our students, programs and profession!
