mmc2023 AFM & SPM Workshops
Morning and afternoon pre-conference workshops can now be added to visitors’ schedules, including sessions covering some of the latest tips and techniques in AFM and SPM, taking place on Monday 3rd July.
‘Going Beyond Optical Microscopy with AFM’ is being run by Bruker UK Ltd, and the afternoon session, titled ‘Bio-SPM - Correlative AFM for Life Science’ is being run by Park Systems UK. Both companies are also exhibiting at mmc2023.
Confi rmed sessions include: ImageJ Workshop: Scientifi c Organiser: Kees Straatman
ImageJ is a powerful public domain image processing and analysis program written in Java, freely available for download from the internet. Fiji is an ImageJ distribution focussed on the visualisation and analysis of microscope images in 2D, 3D, 4D and 5D.
The workshop gives a brief introduction on the use of ImageJ/Fiji and will account for all learning styles as a mix of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on sessions.
EMAG Workshop - Introduction to python for electron microscopists: Scientifi c Organiser: Thomas Slater
This workshop is aimed at researchers in electron microscopy who have no or little experience in coding, but would like to learn how to use the python programming language to acquire and analyse their data. We will guide participants through the basics off python, including loading and displaying images from the electron microscope, with the aim to cover analysis of TEM and STEM images.
More about the workshops - including a rundown of planned talks and demonstrations – can be found on the mmc2023 website. The workshops can be added to your mmc2023 schedule when registering - or you can add them to your existing booking.

RMS Botanical Microscopy Meeting Awards 2023
Jen’s winning poster was titled Spatiotemporal dynamics of nutrient exchange during arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, while her winning image, titled Live view of a concealed symbiosis, revealed the intricacies of an arbuscule inside a living rice root.
Congratulations also go to Ana Romina Fox of UCLouvain, who was the runner-up in the Poster Competition, with her poster titled PIP aquaporin interactions at the reticulum endoplasmic-plasma membrane interphase.
The 12th Botanical Microscopy Meeting, the latest in a long running series of RMS sponsored meetings, encompassed all aspects of bioimaging relating to modern plant cell biology and included six scientifi c sessions, offered talks and a poster session on the Monday evening.

The RMS congratulate Jen McGaley of the University of Cambridge, who received both the Chris Hawes Poster Prize Award and the Image Competition Prize at the Botanical Microscopy Meeting 2023 - held at the John Innes Centre in April.
Topics covered a mix of the latest approaches in microscopy combined with developments in plant cell biology, including morphogenesis, plant membranes, organelle dynamics, plant-microbe interactions as well as quantitative imaging and image analysis. A three day exhibition also ran alongside the event.

Merger Brings EM Expertise into Focus
Ametek companies Gatan, focused on the operation and productivity of electron microscopes and Edax a leader in X-ray microanalysis and electron diffraction instrumentation have merged to fully capitalise on the group’s synergies. The combined organisation will transition Gatan name as the prominent tradename for all products.
“This merger will allow Gatan to continue to push the boundaries of science on both the TEM and SEM,” said Narayan Vishwanathan, Vice President and Business Unit Manager of Ametek Electron Microscopy Technologies.
“Gatan and Edax have already demonstrated synergies in their product
portfolios, including the Cipher System, the fi rst and only system that quantitatively reveals the distribution of lithium in the SEM and the Edax EDS powered by Gatan, the most intuitive and easy-to-use analytical tool for STEM (scanning) applications. We look forward to further integrating our teams, knowledge and skills and are excited about what the future holds.”
