Partnership to Develop E&L Safety and Materials Database


Informatics company ACD/Labs is to combine its expertise in chemical information management with the knowledge and experience of the Extractables and Leachables Safety Information Exchange (ELSIE) consortium of bio/ pharmaceutical and medical device companies to create a searchable knowledge repository of pre-competitive data.


The new E&L database, currently in development and testing, is due to be available to member companies as an educational and research tool in Q2-2023. Accessible through an intuitive web-based interface, it aims to provide robust scientifi c search options and fl exible reporting capabilities.


“ELSIE’s guiding principle from the outset has been to have a forum to share safety data by reducing time and resources needed to gather this data, allowing our member companies to focus on developing safe and effi cacious products,” said Uma Bruen, ELSIE Chairperson. “The consortium is committed to expanding the knowledge-gathering and dissemination we currently offer through the ELSIE Safety Information Database beyond toxicological information to include extractable study results on raw materials, single-use products, drug product packaging and delivery systems and medical devices. “Supporting scientifi c knowledge management and enabling collaborative research are two areas of focus for ACD/Labs,” said Andrew Anderson, Vice President Innovation & Informatics Strategy, ACD/Labs. “In addition to creating a resource for pre-competitive intelligence, ACD/Labs will also make available to ELSIE members the ability to manage not only their own internal toxicological and extractable data but also leachable study results on their specifi c products in a similar system, capable of interacting with the ELSIE member system. Organisations need to move away from storing data in static reports and scattered data silos to power their R&D engine with the data they generate.”

is inviting vendor and Pharma/Biopharma organisations to contribute their toxicological, physicochemical and extractables data for inclusion into the Knowledge Base.

Potential $50 Million Deal for Dundee Spinout


The out-licensing of both Tay Therapeutics’ BET inhibitor projects will bring potential milestone revenues of over $65 million along with tiered royalty payments of up to 10% of net annual sales.


Dr Andrew Woodland, CEO of Tay Therapeutics, said: “The second deal with VYNE is the culmination of two years of discovery and development of BET inhibitors with differentiated selectivity and safety profi les.


“I am delighted for the Tay team and consider VYNE ideally placed to continue developing and maximising the value of the BET inhibitor projects. This deal further validates Tay’s business model of growing organically using revenues to support development activities with around £6 million received in upfront and milestone payments from the VYNE collaboration to date.”

Tay Therapeutics, a University of Dundee spinout, has agreed a licensing deal with US biotech VYNE Therapeutics focused on developing therapies for immuno-infl ammatory diseases. The agreement, potentially worth over $50 million in upfront and milestone payments, plus royalties, gives VYNE exclusive rights to develop the Scottish company’s oral BET inhibitor.


Spun out of the University’s School of Life Sciences in 2020, Tay Therapeutics currently employs 10 people at its Dundee base and focuses on Bromodomain and Extra-Terminal Domain (BET) Inhibitors. TAY-B2, now known as VYN202, (licenced in 2021) has demonstrated potent anti-infl ammatory and anti- fi brotic effects in multiple validated preclinical models. This led VYNE to exercise its option to progress the molecule for treatment of major immuno- infl ammatory conditions with high unmet need.


With the out-licence of its BET inhibitor projects, Tay Therapeutics will now focus on developing a platform to discover and develop a new class of medicine that can cause the body to ignore specifi c mutations. By restoring functional proteins, the drugs seek to address the root cause of these diseases.
