xx UK Focus - Environmental Laboratory Easy-to-Understand Introduction to CHN Microanalysis
CHN microanalysis is a key analytical technique for determining whether or not a sample is pure by providing a precise and accurate analysis of its percentage Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen content and comparing the result versus theoretical figures.
Drawing upon over 25 years experience in the technique, Exeter Analytical Inc. has produced a video that provides an informed and easy-to-understand introduction to accurate determination of Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen by CHN microanalysis.
Further the video also provides an introduction to the Exeter Analytical Model 440 CHN microanalysis system. The Model 440 benefits from a unique horizontal furnace design enabling it to routinely deliver precise and accurate results, without constant system optimisation, for a wide range of samples from pure organic compounds, through organometallic species to proteins and peptides.

Rotary Evaporator with Simplified, Efficient Operation Launched
KNF Neuberger (USA) announces the launch of its RC 900 Rotary Evaporator, designed to simplify rotary evaporation and enhance safety in the lab. The all-new RC 900 provides lab personnel with a unique combination of high-performance functionality and a simplified user experience, from an instrument that remains whisper-quiet and requires minimal space on the lab bench.
“At KNF Lab, we pride ourselves on our strong reputation for producing solid, high- performance equipment for real laboratory situations,” said Jim Findlay, Marketing Manager, Laboratory Products at KNF. “The new RC 900 is a perfect example of this, making rotary evaporation more user-friendly than ever before.”
The RC 900 provides lab personnel with streamlined rotary evaporation via a multitude of operational enhancements. Specifically, the instrument boasts straightforward flask exchange; now, a scientist can simply lock the flask into place using just one hand. Optimum flask angle is conveniently set via an adjustable knob. The system offers wireless control of all evaporation functions with an easy-to-use touchscreen and control knob. A cordless heating bath with pour spout encourages safe emptying without spilling, maximising ease-of-use.
ATG Scientific is pleased to be the appointed UK distributor for IonBench, manufacturers of laboratory furniture products that are purposely designed to make it much easier for you to operate scientific equipment such as LC/GC/MS in a working environment which is both ergonomically optimised and safer for personnel.
IonBench products are ideal for environmental, pharmaceutical, clinical and university laboratories using mass spectrometers and many other scientific instruments including ICP, HPLC, LC/ GC, SFC, AFM etc.
The range of mobile benches are all produced with integrated noise reduction enclosures, thanks to the clever use of vacuum pumps which are located on a specific patented anti-vibration platform to ensure a quieter working environment, and also include a cooling system based on silent fan technology, with an overheating temperature alarm. The designs of the solidly built benches take specific user- specific instrument requirements into consideration, and they can be easily moved thanks to the lockable castor wheels. What’s more, the mobility of these benches means great savings on your precious laboratory space, as they can be positioned against walls and relocated as necessary.
Optional Items for the benches include drawers, information control packages, PC holders, solvent waste storage, oil drain pumps and extra electrical power sockets.
ATG Scientific is also offering the excellent elevating HPLC/ UHPLC tables from IonBench. These tables, also on lockable castor wheels, can be easily lifted up or down by the simple use of a switch, for convenient and safe access to the top of your HPLC/UHPLC. Designed with a chemical resistant surface and a weight capacity of up to 250kg, elevating tables can optimise the positioning and performance of your LC instrumentation, which can lead to improvements in the layout, flexibility and productivity of your laboratory. The tables are also ideal for use alongside the IonBench mobile MS benches, which, as indicated above, can provide useful space savings (of up to 30%) and significant reductions in noise with built-in (vacuum pump) soundproof enclosures.
The main features of these elevating tables are: improved positioning and safety when using HPLC/UHPLC systems, very stable, secure platforms that electrically raise and lower as needed, elimination of the requirement for a step stool, or for operators to lift solvents above their heads (an obvious safety risk!), a range of chemically resistant work surface sizes, a weight capacity up to 250kg, and lockable caster wheels meaning the tables can be easily moved for optimum positioning around your lab.

“Our experience with KNF Lab pump systems has been great, and we were happy to test the rotary evaporator,” said Dr. Alexander Scherer, Chair of Organic Chemistry at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, who has beta-tested the new system in his laboratory. “We exposed the RC 900 to real laboratory conditions, such as corrosive and aggressive solvents, and made further suggestions on how to make the system even easier to operate. KNF Lab took these suggestions on board and the result is a high-performance system that features a user-friendly, intuitive touch screen and automated functions which really make life easier, helping to guarantee highly efficient and safe operation. We are delighted to be one of the first laboratories to buy one.”

ICP Method Provides Broad Scan of Elemental Composition
A new analytical service from Warwick Analytical Service, a division of Exeter Analytical, draws upon proprietary ICP-OES methodology developed by the company enabling them to provide simultaneous qualitative determination of up to 67 elements** in a single, cost effective measurement.
The Warwick Analytical ‘Look & See ICP Scan Service’ provides information on elements present at 10-100 ppm right up to greater than 1% w/w. Measured intensities are compared to intensities of traceable standards to obtain the elemental levels in the unknown sample. Multiple wavelengths have been identified for each element to avoid errors due to the spectral interferences commonly found when using only a single analytical wavelength.
Operating in an ISO 17025 and GMP compliant environment following strict operating procedures ensures Warwick Analytical Service delivers
top quality ICP data consistently. Equipped with modern high resolution ICP instrumentation and microwave digestion equipment - Warwick Analytical Service is able to offer its ‘Look & See ICP Scan Service’ on almost any solid or liquid environmental sample.
Warwick Analytical Service is a company dedicated to providing analytical excellence at a realistic cost. Through experienced staff, the latest analytical instrumentation and working closely with clients - WAS has established a strong reputation for informed personal service and delivering top quality data on time.
