New GC Column Set for Chlorinated Pesticides Runs Seven EPA Methods

Phenomenex Inc. (USA), a global leader in the research and manufacture of advanced technologies for the separation sciences, introduces Zebron ZB-CLPesticides-1 and 2 for dual-column pesticide testing by GC/ECD (electron capture detection). This column set saves time and money for chlorinated pesticide testing commonly performed by environmental and drinking water testing labs, which often need to run up to seven EPA methods on a single instrument. To carry out this testing, labs typically need to perform multiple, time-consuming column changes which negatively impacts productivity. The Zebron ZB-CLPesticides GC column set, which contains two phases with orthogonal selectivities specifi cally optimized for pesticide analysis, runs all seven methods. These new columns expand the Phenomenex Zebron family of products for GC pesticide testing, which also includes ZB-SemiVolatiles and ZB-MultiResidue-1 and 2.

“Today’s pesticide testing labs are driven to deliver precise results faster but with less resources,” explains Kristen Parnell, brand manager for GC products at Phenomenex. “ZB-CLPesticides columns allow chemists to save time and gain fl exibility by running multiple pesticide classes on one

GC/ECD instrument, on one column pair, as opposed to traditional setups that require time-consuming and costly column switches per method.”

Zebron ZB-CLPesticides-1 and 2 columns also offer a direct, drop-in alternative to Restek chlorinated pesticides columns. The columns are available individually or packaged in a kit, which also contains a 5-meter guard column, Y-connector and polyimide resin.

Joanne Foy, a chemist at TriMatrix Laboratories, is an early user of the new Zebron columns. “I was able to install the ZB-CLPesticides-1 and ZB-CLPesticides-2 columns as direct replacements for the Restek Rtx-CLPesticides and Rtx-CLPesticides2 columns that I currently use and made no changes to the method,” Foy commented. Phenomenex offers online, 24/7 support for pesticides analysis along with application and method development services and certifi ed reference materials for calibration.

The Hiden (UK) MIMS Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometer series now feature an extended range of submersible insertion probes and fl ow-through cuvette- style interfaces specifi cally engineered for measurement of dissolved gases and vapours in aqueous solution. All incorporate a semipermeable membrane interface selected for operation in diverse environments with optimum transition rate for the gaseous species of interest.

The systems provide real-time analysis of biological and physical processes within aquatic and marine processes, with interfaces refi ned for specifi c applications including bio-fuel development, soil analysis, water quality determination, fermentation culture monitoring and photo-responsive processes.

The compact mass spectrometer module is bench-top and cart-mounting compatible, with comprehensive control, and data analysis programs for both automated and manual operation. Multiple sampling lines can be accommodated for automated sequential multi-media sampling, the QIC BioStream variant currently operating with up to 80 sample streams. A custom- design service is available to assist with interface design for specifi c R and D projects.

31144pr@reply-direct.com Portable GC Analysis of VOCs in Water, Soil & Air

New Star Environmental (USA) introduces the Frog-4000, a fully contained purge and trap GC system with analytical capabilities that are comparable to a commercial lab with the advantage of its compact size. The hand-held GC is designed for real-time portable analysis of VOCs in water, soil, and air. This unit can be used as a portable GC PID for environmental testing in the fi eld, in a mobile lab, portable lab, or in a commercial environmental lab.

Applications: Groundwater Monitoring, Surface Water Monitoring, Vapour Intrusion Monitoring, Soil Vapour Extraction Process Monitoring, Soil Vapour Monitoring, Soil Monitoring, Environmental remediation, Site Characterisation, Adaptable for IAQ and Process Monitoring.

The system has a micro preconcentrator, micro GC column, and a photoionisation detector (PID). The FROG-4000 scrubs ambient air to use as the carrier gas. The display screen provides a chromatogram of VOC identifi cation and concentration in PPB of analyte. Analysis results are available in only fi ve minutes. The SD cards store fi eld analyses with chromatography software for data analyses and it can perform a complete real-time GC analysis while connected to a laptop.

Chemical capabilities include but are not limited to:BTEX, TCE, PCE, Benzene, Pharmaceutical VOCs, Non methane organic compounds (NMVOCs), Priority Pollutants, Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) and other VOCs.

A rechargeable battery lasts for 6 hours. The unit comes with computer interface standard RS-232 port or USB.

IET Annual Buyers’ Guide 2014/15 www.envirotech-online.com

The EE354 miniature transmitter, from E+E Elektronic (Austria), permits precise dew point measurement and is ideal for monitoring refrigeration driers and use in OEM applications. The small design, robust stainless steel housing and excellent long- term stability are further advantages of the transmitter. The measurement values are issued on an analogue 4-20 mA and a digital Modbus RTU output.

A wide range of applications is offered by the multi-functional handheld unitOmniport 30. With various interchangeable sensing probes, up to 22 measurements can be recorded, such as relative humidity, temperature, air velocity and CO2 and the data stored via the data logger function. Operation is simple and intuitive via the large touchscreen display.

Precise information on the moisture in oil can save costs for unnecessary maintenance work and avoid expensive machine downtimes. The EE364 moisture in oil transmitter provides the option of continuous monitoring of transformer, lubrication, hydraulic and engine oils as well as diesel fuel. The measurements for water activity (aw), temperature (t) and water content (x) are output via two confi gurable 4-20 mA analogue outputs as well as a digital Modbus RTU interface. The compact design and the stainless steel housing permit space-saving integration in demanding applications.

The EE210 permits precise humidity and temperature measurement, even in diffi cult environmental conditions. This is ensured via the combination of completely encapsulated measurement electronics and the special E+E coating on the HCT01 humidity sensor. The EE210 also calculates further physical values such as dew point temperature, absolute humidity and mixing ratio. The transmitter is available as a wall or duct version, with an optional display. A model with remote sensing probe was also recently launched. Typical applications for the EE210 are in agriculture (stalls, hatchers, incubators, greenhouses), in storage rooms, cooling chambers or indoor pools.
