Air Monitoring

New TRAP-GC-MS-FID Instrument for Ambient Air Monitoring Designed for Onsite Use

To ensure personal safety and an effi cient repeatability of industrial processes, the analysis of ambient air is crucial. In particular, electronic boards are produced in clean air room by a complex lithographic process using very reactive chemicals. The nature and concentration of volatile compounds can be different depending on the chemical process and can also vary widely. There is a need to precisely and continuously analyse gas processes in air with an instrument designed for industrial use.

Chromatotec (France) has developed a turnkey solution which allows the quantifi cation and identifi cation of compounds at ppt, ppb, ppm and % levels. The airmoTWA is a new industry standard for online and continuous TRAP-GC-MS-FID. It encompasses a specifi c trap to concentrate the sample, a column for separation of chemicals and two detectors: a new micro fl ame ionisation detector (FID) and a mass spectrometer for quantifi cation and identifi cation respectively. The airmoTWA is simple to use and incredibly sensitive and delivers robust and reliable performance. Of most imprtance to many users, the instrument can monitor high and low concentrations for a large number of molecules. The instrument measures and records concentrations of chemicals and can have its alarm systems set to activate on important changes of the surrounding atmosphere. In Figure 2, a mass spectrometer chromatogram obtained analysing ambient air is shown. The peak resolution and sensitivity of the instruments facilitate quantifying and identifying very low VOC concentrations.

New Range of Indoor Air Quality Tests Launched

For More Info, email: email:

Waverton Analytics Ltd (UK) has launched a range of indoor air quality (IAQ) tests that will be of interest to professionals concerned with air quality in buildings, including environmental consultants, industrial hygienists, facilities managers, building surveyors and the insurance industry.

For More Info, email: email:

The range includes tests for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and tobacco smoke and all involve “active” sampling, where air is pumped through a tube containing a sorbent material. The VOC test also includes the analysis of mould-specifi c VOCs (i.e. mould metabolites), which provides an effective means of screening for active mould growth within a building, including hidden mould.

Analysis of the thermal desorption tube samples is carried out using GC-MS in the case of VOC and tobacco smoke tests and Fluorescence Spectroscopy in the case of formaldehyde.

Results from each test are detailed in a comprehensive report with VOC test results reporting the total level of VOCs (TVOCs) detected as well as total mould-specifi c VOCs (TMVOCs) in the sample. VOC test reports also include a listing of the highest composition chemical species found as well as the levels of any hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) in the sample.

Easy Evaluation of Mass Flow Meter and Controller

Axetris (Switzerland) offers a broad range of mass fl ow meter and controllers including ultra compact modules for system integration, stand alone types and complete system for gas mixing and splitting. The product range has been specially designed for the need of OEM customer.

To allow an easy and straight forward evaluation and to reduce design in time Axetris introduced a new revision of its LabKit. The LabKit consists of a LabView based Graphical User Interface and an RS-232/USB interface allowing a direct PC or Labtop connection.

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows to read and display the measured gas fl ow and contains also a confi gurable data logger. For the mass fl ow controllers it can be used to adjust the fl ow set point and to select the valve control mode (automatic or manual). It is possible to select a constant set point or a rectangular set point curve. In addition the customer can defi ne an arbitrary set point curve to simulate the behavior of his system as close as possible.

The GUI can also be used to read device information like type, serial number and calibration.

The LabKit is available for qualifi ed OEM customers starting in April 2014.

The MFM/MFC 2000 mass fl ow controller family persuades with an industry leading dynamic range and excellent repeatability and response time.

All devices modules are available with calibrations for the following gases: Air, N2

, O2 , Ar, CO2 and with ranges 10-3000 sccm (N2

V and 4...20 mA and digital RS-232 TTL, RS-232 EIA and RS- 485 is supported.
