42 Gas Detection

Portable Multi and Single Gas Detector

Meeting the Ever-Changing Demands of the Global Biogas Market

Fixed biogas analysers from Geotech (UK) are now available with additional options for moisture management to help with challenges from wet biogas. A new variant on the reliable GA3000 PLUS also provides oxygen (O2

) measurement designed for very low O2 levels, and new pre-calibrated cells for all models will reduce onsite service downtime even further.

Geotech fi xed analysers were fi rst launched in 2011 with the GA3000, an easy to install and simple to use gas analyser for methane (CH4 sulphide (H2

), carbon dioxide (CO2 ), O2

to become the GA3000 PLUS, and included options for up to three sample points as well as high and low H2 post desulphurisation monitoring. The GA3000 PLUS can also optionally monitor carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2 additional gases and is available with Modbus and Profi bus communications.

There are now over 300 Geotech fi xed systems installed in a variety of applications across the globe, from waste water treatment in the UK, to palm oil processing in Malaysia, and CHP engine protection the world over. Now, for 2014, Geotech are introducing the latest improvements to the GA3000 PLUS to cater for the varying needs of a wide range of anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas applications.

Advanced Multifunction Gas Detection System

•Flammable & Toxic

Gas Detection

•Gas Analysis •Flame Detection

•Ex Proof Acoustical Alerting

SPECIAL APPLICATION

DUCT MOUNTING TYPE GAS DETECTION SYSTEM This Special Application is an industrial system that enables gas detection devices to detect gases in duct or pipes. It’s extremely rugged construction makes it particularly suitable for chemical and petrochemical application on & off shore. The application to the duct or pipe is made through a suitable flange with its counterflange to be soldered to the duct. As an option the system can be equipped with shut off ball valves to enable the easy application of sample gas to the sensor for calibration purposes.

The GALILEO SMS (SIL Multisystem), from Sensitron (Italy), is an advanced multifunction gas detection control panel designed to comply with the SIL (Safety Integrity Level) requirements, according to the European Standard EN 50402 and IEC 61508 on Functional Safety. The functional safety is aimed at supervising and managing the behaviour of an overall system in case of failures.

To assure a full redundancy, the control unit’s main board is designed around 2 powerful microprocessors that communicate to each other the monitored data, ensuring the complete availability of all main board functions even in the case of a failure in one microprocessor. A broad range of self-testing facilities are implemented to detect and localise possible faults.

SPECIAL PRODUCT

SY - HT HIGH TEMPERATURE SY - HT is an ATEX certified flameproof flammable gas sensor with catalytic combus- tion technology specially designed for applications in extreme environments. Suitable for operating in an ambient temperature range from -50°C to +300°C. Its extremely robust construction with an AISI 316L stainless steel enclosure and ma- terials which were originally used in space applications make it particularly suited to detecting flammable gas in turbo gas generators. The sensor is connected to its SY 1 - L control unit which powers it and provides measurements on a digital display and a 4-20 mA analogue output.

The redundancy offered by every module being part of the system, added to the possibility to communicate with remote input/output modules via a redundant closed BUS, makes this system comply with the Functional Safety requirements up to SIL3.

The GALILEO SMS consists of a control unit, used for monitoring and controlling, connected to an optional number of Analogue Input Modules (AIM), LOOP modules and RELAY modules.

The system will be connected in two digital RS485 (EIA-485) type closed loops capable of accommodating a maximum of 256 gas detectors connected as addressable gas detectors type SMART3G or SMART3 “S” connected via 32 input loop modules or analogue 4-20mA detectors connected through 8-input AIM (Analogue Inputs Modules), and a maximum of 520 relay outputs connected as 512 programmable relays on the Relay Outputs modules (8- 16 relays module, basic and extended respectively).

The fl exibility of the GA3000 PLUS has been enhanced with new options for additional moisture management. Biogas is generally very humid and condensate can form within the system, leading to failures and damage if not managed correctly. Gas chilling systems can be expensive and fragile, so Geotech has developed a simple, robust system suitable for all biogas monitoring applications. This is an add-on option to the GA3000 PLUS which is already designed to offer market-leading resistance to problems from wet biogas. One feature is the automated drain feature on the catch pot. This removes the need for an engineer to visit site to maintain this part of the system, saving time and resource on site. The range of user-replaceable parts has also been extended to include pre-calibrated electrochemical cells, allowing them to simply be replaced with no need for user calibration.

In addition to these new features, the popular continuous monitoring variant of the GA3000 PLUS, the GA3KPLUSC, has been superseded by the new GA3KPLUSE. The GA3KPLUSE builds on the strong reputation of accuracy and reliability of all the GA3000 PLUS models with an improved O2

measurement to give a longer life on the O2 an automated daily three minute air purge to keep the O2 cell in O2 cell healthier for longer, reducing operating costs.

Geotech closely supports its fi xed biogas systems around the world and is continually developing the platform to meet the changes of the biogas market.
