46 Gas Detection ATEX & IECEx Certifi ed NDIR Sensor for CO2 or HC Detection The IR series of infrared gas detection sensors, from N.E.T. (Italy), use the technique of NDIR (Non Dispersive Infrared) to monitor the presence of hydrocarbons or carbon dioxide.


This technique is based on the fact that the gas has an unique and well defi ned light absorption curve in the infrared spectrum that can be used to identify the specifi c gas. The gas concentration can be determined by using a suitable infrared source and analysing the quantity of energy absorbed from the gas inside the optical path.


The IRNEX-P Low Power sensor is equipped with electronics and fi rmware in order to provide an output that is linearised and temperature compensated. The output is analogue voltage type [0.4 V—2 V] dc (other voltages are available on request). The IRNEX-P Low Power sensor has been tested and certifi ed according to the ATEX directive and IECEx. IRNEX – P is now SIL2 approved.


The main features are: explosion proof Ex d IR sensor for surface (II 2G) and underground (I M2) classifi ed areas, analogue voltage standard output, incorporated signal linearisation and temperature compensation suited for manufacturers without any specialist knowledge in IR technology, standard sensor size 20 mm, fast response, solid, rugged construction, wide operating temperature and humidity range (-40°C / + 60°C), low power consumption (45mA) and new optics “Nautilus”.

New Portable Gas Bump Tester for Remote Testing of Personal Gas Detectors


Crowcon (UK) has announced the availability of a new portable gas solution for bump testing. The new method eliminates the need to carry around cumbersome gas bottles and docking stations or return to base to test handheld gas detectors.


Resulting from an innovative reapplication of existing technology, the Crowcon Bump Test Gas Spray performs bump tests on handheld gas detectors, either on site or on-the-road, using a 12 litre spray canister. The gas is simply applied through a straw on the canister nozzle and a small amount of gas is sprayed into a calibration cap placed over the sensor.


“Having a fully portable 12 litre spray can and straw is just the ticket to test and calibrate on site. It could not be easier,” stated Richard Dunn, Portable Product Manager, Crowcon. “With no regulator, no heavy gas bottle and no docking station, it’s a no brainer for bump testing.”


Traditionally, to conduct a bump test, an engineer would require heavy gas bottles, regulators, docking stations and other associated paraphernalia, but for most, this really is not an option. Engineers on-the-road have been asking for something to address this challenge.


“We have listened to our customer concerns and found a novel way to satisfy their requirements,” Richard Dunn added. “The gas cans can be bought in a range of


gases or combination of gases to suit. The kit comes with a canister of chosen gas, nozzle, straw and an MSDS sheet.”


Crowcon is offering this solution as the most cost-effective and easiest way to bump test when mobile. Less equipment means less weight to carry and more room for storing productive equipment. Spray canisters are also covered by less demanding regulation (directives UN1950), helping keep costs down further.
