personalised medicine, and BGI, (Beijing,China) the world’s largest genome organisation, have announced the successful completion of a project dedicated to expanding Exonhit’s Genome-Wide SpliceArrayTM animal model species.

to an additional strategic preclinical

“Combining BGI’s next-generation sequencing ability with the profiling efficiency of Exonhit unique SpliceArray™ platform to discover new transcript content will enable a better understanding of the biology contributing to the onset and progression of disease. This new powerful combination will facilitate the rapid discovery, development and

Opportunities Europe and Middle East

By Heather Hobbs

With expansion a prime focus for businesses worldwide, many are looking towards rapidly establishing new regions of growth, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. This section of Lab Asia will especially look at the success of both Asian and European companies with established premises or business partnerships, highlighting the opportunities that exist while realising potential for other companies to move into export markets.

Exonhit and BGI Complete Sequencing Project Exonhit (Paris, France), a biotech company focused on

commercialisation of the most relevant therapeutics, biomarkers and molecular diagnostics. We look forward to working with BGI as a preferred partner on future discovery projects,” commented Matthew Pando, PhD., Executive Vice President, Therapeutics at Exonhit.

“There is a high need for biomarker discovery as Pharma and Biotech players search for prognostic and predictive biomarkers in animal models, for designing clinical trials and developing companion diagnostics,” said Zifei Yang, Director of Pharma Business Development at BGI. “BGI Europe is pleased to partner with Exonhit to leverage BGI’s next-generation sequencing technology with Exonhit’s SpliceArray™ platform.”

Spectro Analytical Instruments was named among the winners of the 49th annual R&D 100 Awards for the development of array detection technology for mass spectrometers along with the technology’s co-developers—Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the University of Arizona, Indiana University and iMAGERLABS.

Spectro was cited for its role in the commercialisation of the breakthrough technology with the introduction of the Spectro MS inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometer in March 2010. The instrument also was awarded a 2010 Silver Pittcon Editors’ Award for Best New Product at the 2010 Pittsburgh Conference and a 2011 Annual Conference of China Scientific Instruments (ACCSI) Award as “one of the best new instruments 2010”.

“We are extremely pleased to be selected along with our co- developers for this prestigious award,” comments Manfred Bergsch, Managing Director, Spectro Analytical Instruments GmbH, Kleve, Germany. “It confirms our belief that Spectro MS represents a breakthrough that changes ICP mass spectrometry forever.

“With its ability to simultaneously measure the complete elemental spectrum, we believe the Spectro MS will

revolutionise the mass spectrometry market the same way the introduction of simultaneous optical emission spectrometers did several years ago,” he adds.

Established by the editors of R&D magazine in 1963, the R&D 100 Award is presented annually to the 100 most significant new developments in research and development as determined by an independent panel of judges and the editors of R&D.
