Dry-Bags Make Light Work of Bulk Media Preparation
Oxoid Dry-Bags are a labour-saving, convenient and rapid way to prepare and dispense large volumes of culture media and diluents. Thermo Fisher Scientific announced a new customer application video that demonstrates to food microbiologists how Dry-Bags™ take the hassle out of media preparation.
Each Dry-Bag contains pre-weighed dehydrated culture medium or diluent and is irradiated for sterility. All that is required is the addition of water – either through filter sterilisation or by adding pre-sterilised water under aseptic conditions.
Dry-Bags remove the need for glassware, which makes them a safe and convenient option for food testing laboratories and eliminates washing of glassware and heat sterilisation. Once water is added and powder dissolved, the Dry-Bag is ready to use immediately. When empty, the bag is simply disposed of with normal laboratory waste.
“Our aim is to provide food microbiologists with products that enhance the efficiency of their laboratory,” said Cheryl Mooney, Food and Industrial Product Manager, Oxoid. “Using Oxoid Dry-Bags, ALcontrol Laboratories was able to free up their staff and resources for other important tasks, enabling them to increase capacity for product testing in their laboratory.”
Dry-Bags are ready to use in a matter of minutes and contain sufficient material to make 20 litres (88 aliquots of 225mL) of medium or diluent. Dry-Bags are available with filters attached for convenience or without filters as a lower-cost option. For those Dry-Bags supplied without filters, autoclavable, reusable filters are also available. Oxoid Dry-Bags are flat-packed in compact boxes of five or ten bags, which can be stored conveniently at room temperature.

New Sensors for Measurement of Dissolved Oxygen and Lowest Conductivity
With four new electrochemical sensors Hamilton is expanding the possibilities and application areas of the ARC system. ARC is a newly developed technology for process analysis launched in 2010 by Hamilton Bonaduz AG, Switzerland. The system works with intelligent sensors containing the integrated functions of a transmitter. Now Hamilton has expanded its sensor portfolio with four more electrochemical ARC sensors for use in biotechnology and pharma processes, the measurement of oxygen traces and measurement with high CO2 partial pressure as well as sensors for monitoring pure water conductivity. The OXYFERM FDA ARC sensor is designed for electrochemical oxygen measurements in fermentations and pharma processes, the OXYGOLD G ARC sensor for measurements of low-ppb oxygen traces in aqueous media. OXYGOLD B
ARC sensor measures low-ppb oxygen traces in beverages containing CO2. For monitoring of pure water quality in industrial processes, the new CONDCELL PWSE ARC with Triclamp adapter has now been released by Hamilton. It offers a dynamic measurement range from 0.01 to 2000 µS/cm covering processes in pharmaceutical water generation and power plants.
All Hamilton ARC sensors offer fully compensated intelligent measurement signals with two 4-20mA analogue outputs, digital Modbus interface and wireless transmission using the optional ARC Wi adapter. All new sensors are fully compatible with the existing ARC product family: VISIFERM DO ARC, ARC pH, CONDUCELL ARC, ARC View and ARC Wi.
Users benefit from various advantages of the new technology of the ARC sensors compared to conventional systems in process analysis that work with transmitters. Procurement costs are saved since the ARC sensors already contain the transmitter functions.
The installation work is reduced leading to further cost savings, too. For operations the much easier and more convenient handling during process analysis provides for higher staff productivity. In addition the ARC equipment needs less space. Due to the direct connection to the PC/PLC the system delivers a reliable, robust signal.
None of the usual interferences from humidity, cable length or other factors occur. The ARC sensors already contain intelligent functions such as diagnostic, history and calibration data.
