Large Selection of Dialysis Membranes
Founded in 1971 in California, Spectrum Chemical Mfg. Corporation manufactures and distributes 15,000 fine chemicals and over 120,000 lab equipment and supplies. In 2011 they set up a new facility, Spectrum China Ltd, to provide more convenient services to customers in the Asia Pacific area.
As the pioneer and leader in laboratory dialysis products, Spectrum offers the largest selection of dialysis membranes to meet the ever increasing and varied demands of the laboratory researcher. Keeping in mind MWCO, volume size, chemical compatibility, temperature, pH and solvent conditions, Spectrum provide two fundamental grades of dialysis membranes, Spectra/Por®
Standard Membrane and Spectra/Por Biotech Membrane, as well as 2
types of membranes, Regenerated Cellulose (RC) and Cellulose Ester (CE). Depending on the membrane grade and type, Spectrum offers the largest assortment of membrane configurations: tubing, Ready-to-Use Dialysis Devices (RDD) and flat-sheet with MWCO from 100 to 100KD.

Completed GMP Manufacture of Midkine Test
Cellmid Ltd has completed technology transfer in relation to its midkine blood test (MK ELISA) and the test kits have been successfully produced in a GMP compliant environment in AsureQuality’s fully accredited facility in Melbourne.
Transitioning from a development phase to fully GMP compliant manufacture is an important milestone towards being able to produce commercial quantities of the MK ELISA. In addition, it is a substantial step in Cellmid’s application for regulatory approval (CE marking) of the kit.
The MK ELISA was originally developed by Cellmid in collaboration with BioGenes in Germany. The test is a highly accurate method for determining midkine levels in blood (serum) of individuals with a detection limit of 8 pg/mL (pg/mL = parts per trillion).
The MK ELISA is highly accurate in quantifying serum midkine concentrations between 25 and 1000 pg/mL (dynamic range). This is very important as most healthy adults have around 300pg/mL serum midkine levels or less. With the current dynamic range Cellmid’s MK ELISA may be used to differentiate between healthy individuals and patients who suffer from cancer.
The commercially produced GMP compliant MK ELISA will be used to complete testing in Cellmid’s current in-house diagnostic programs, including CK3000 (testing of healthy individuals), CS5000 (testing of cancer patients) and CAN104 (veterinary cancer diagnostic program). In addition, it will be made available to collaboration partners and licensees.

Automated Production of High Quality Blood Agar
Integra has released a new application note that demonstrates how combining its Mediajet Petri dish filler with the DOSE IT peristaltic pump provides an optimised automated solution for the production of high quality blood agar. The quality of blood agar plates is of prime importance for the reliable determination of haemolysis type - a common technique in medical diagnostics to classify Gram positive cocci. High quality agar plates have a typical light red colour - a characteristic feature of intact erythrocytes. Agar plates with lysed red blood cells appear brown coloured, a feature that complicates the reading of haemolysis pattern. To avoid spontaneous lysis of erythrocytes, it is important to keep the temperature of the agar as low as possible. In addition to minimise cell lysis, the time the blood remains in the hot agar has to be as short as possible. Meeting these requirements is a challenge for most laboratories. The new application note describes an automated protocol that minimizes the time that the blood is exposed to hot agar medium and thus efficiently reduces thermally induced lysis of erythrocytes. By preparing the blood agar using an Integra Mediaclave media preparator, the dispensing temperature can be set and maintained at low temperature. Furthermore by combining the Mediajet Petri Dish filler together with a Dose-It peristaltic pump and a special tubing set for blood agar the experimenters were able to add blood to the agar immediately before pouring the plate thereby reducing blood cell lysis significantly.
