UHPLC Solution Combined with Advanced Autosampler Delivers Numerous Benefits
Shimadzu UK’s next-generation Nexera UHPLC system offers a number of ultra-high performance benefits including the lowest carryover, highest pressure rating, shortest autosampler cycle time and the highest injection volume precision, all with the flexibility of Open Access. The combined benefits lower the system’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) while delivering the highest level of productivity gains required by the most demanding application markets such as the pharmaceutical and food industries. The system is capable of running at high throughput with a 2300-plus sample capacity.
Offering precise solvent delivery, excellent reproducibility and near-zero carryover the Nexera UHPLC system is a green LC and ensures fully reliable ultra-high speed and ultra-high resolution analysis in all application fields. Shimadzu’s Nexera is a supremely flexible system and allows users to perform high-temperature analysis, automatic sample pretreatment and multidimensional LC separation.
Coupled with Shimadzu’s SIL-30ACMP autosampler, the Nexera UHPLC system offers the tightest integration with AB Sciex and Thermo Fisher mass spectrometry platforms. The SIL-30ACMP autosampler enables lower carryover performance and shorter cycle times than competitor systems.
“The Nexera UHPLC solution supported by the SIL-30ACMP autosampler is ideal for all users struggling with carryover problems causing re-analysis of samples and inducing extra costs. The faster autosampler helps minimise cycle times thereby enhancing the return on investment (ROI) of the LC-MS/MS system,” explained Stuart Phillips, Shimadzu UK’s LC/LCMS Business Manager. “The solution is also appealing for users of AB Sciex and Thermo Fisher Mass Spectrometers who either do not have a UHPLC capability or are struggling to integrate their existing HPLC or UHPLC systems with AB Sciex’s Analyst software or Thermo Fisher’s XCalibur software. Our no-compromise solution curbs the higher cost of analysis associated with lost runs when communications have failed and also removes the unnecessary complexity and system costs that some users face when they need to use more than one software platform to reliably run their LC-MS/MS system”.

Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc showed its expanded portfolio of market-leading chromatography solutions within the Thermo Scientific and Dionex booths at HPLC 2011, a first since Thermo Fisher acquired Dionex. Among the range of instruments, software and consumables on display was the newly launched Thermo Scientific Accucore HPLC column range.
Founded on state-of-the-art Core Enhanced Technology and utilising vast experience in phase bonding and packing, the Thermo Scientific Accucore HPLC column range is a major addition to Thermo Fisher’s portfolio. It provides a unique chromatography solution to enhance laboratory workflow and efficiency by providing increased sensitivity and peak resolution in columns that are compatible with almost any instrument.
Showcasing its commitment to advancing proteomics research, Thermo Fisher launched the Thermo Scientific EASY-nLC 1000 split-free nano-flow system at HPLC 2011. The system significantly increases chromatographic resolution and, as a result protein and peptide identifications, with effortless ultra-high pressure operation. In addition, the company also showcased the newly introduced Thermo Scientific Velos Pro linear ion trap and Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Velos Pro hybrid FTMS mass spectrometers, systems that provide improved quantitative performance, faster scanning, Trap-Higher Energy Collision Dissociation (HCD) and enhanced robustness.
Thermo Fisher also introduced the Thermo Scientific Q Exactive high-performance benchtop quadrupole-Orbitrap LC-MS/MS, combining quadrupole precursor selection and high-resolution accurate mass (HR/AM) Orbitrap™ mass analysis to deliver high confidence quantitative and qualitative (quan/qual) workflows. With innovative HR/AM Quanfirmation™ capability, the Q Exactive™ mass spectrometer can identify, quantify and confirm more trace-level peptides and proteins in complex mixtures in one analytical run. The new Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Elite hybrid mass spectrometer provides the resolution and sensitivity needed to improve the determination of the molecular weights of intact proteins within laboratories, as well as enable greater proteome coverage through improved protein, PTM and peptide identification, even at low abundances.

A US drug discovery company has found a single instrument that meets all its requirements for radio TLC scanning and radio HPLC detection - the dual-system Scan-RAM 1B from LabLogic Systems.
The company uses its configuration of Scan/Flow- RAM/Agilent for QC purposes, detecting mainly F-18 and I- 111 in its small animal imaging laboratory, which has extensive facilities for SPECT/CT, PET/CT, MRI and bioluminescence, amongst others.
The key user of the system said: “The scanner is versatile – in particular, it can be configured with two detectors simultaneously – and it saves valuable bench space by fitting in a small hood with the Agilent HPLC system that the company acquired at the same time.
“Users find the Scan-RAM system simple to operate, and it is GLP/GMP compliant - as is the Laura radiochromatography software that controls it. Further plus points are the instrument’s USB ports for fast data transfer, instrument and HV control and responsive after-sales support from LabLogic.”

Fast Yet Sensitive HPLC Analysis of N-Methylcarbamate Pesticides
Dionex is pleased to announce an improved method for the determination of carbamates in rice, potato, and corn (maize) as specified in AOAC Method 2007.01 and European Union standard EN 15662, 2008. Application Note 272: Faster Yet Sensitive Determination of N-Methylcarbamates in Rice, Potato, and Corn by HPLC demonstrates accurate results using this new application on an UltiMate®
3000 high-
performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system with an Acclaim®
Carbamate column and detection performed using an FLD-3400RS fluorescence detector.

The N-methylcarbamates and the N-methylcarbamoximes are among the most widely used pesticides in agriculture. Because these pesticides may create health problems - including issues impacting the central nervous and reproductive systems—concerns over the presence of carbamate residues in water, crops, and food products have promoted increased awareness and testing for these compounds. This application provides detection in crops of the same pesticides specified in U.S. EPA guidelines for monitoring the presence of carbamate pesticides and related compounds in raw surface water using EPA Method 531.2.
