Spotlight Safety & Hazard Containment

Addressable Smoke and Heat Detection for Non-Hazardous Areas (EQP) Safety System and devices in non-

Detector Electronics Corporation (Det-Tronics) has introduced its Addressable Smoke and Heat (ASH) Module. The ASH Module is an interface device that manages inputs/outputs between the Eagle Quantum Premier®

hazardous areas, such as living quarters and control rooms. Det-Tronics is a business of UTC Fire and Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

“The ASH Module seamlessly integrates non-hazardous and hazardous areas into a single fire and gas life-safety system,” said Mike Bragg, Product Manager at Det-Tronics.

In addition the ASH Module is flexible enough to support multiple addressable devices such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, manual call stations, beacons, sounders, and I/O modules. The ASH Module offers powerful yet simple programming that allows users to tailor the solution beyond the capabilities of conventional fire panels and is CE marked; hazardous rated by FM, CSA, ATEX, IECEx; and FM performance approved to NFPA 72-2010.

The Oxygen Flask Combustion Unit from Exeter Analytical, Inc provides a highly safe tool for preparing samples for elemental analysis of Halogens, Sulphur, Phosphorus and a number of metals using the Schöniger flask method.

The Schöniger flask method is a well-proven technique for combusting samples prior to elemental analysis by ion chromatography or titration. The Schöniger flask method using the attractively priced OFCU-1 is capable of being used for repeatable determination of elemental composition from percentage levels to parts per million.

The durably constructed Oxygen Flask Combustion Unit (OFCU-1) copes easily with a wide range of sample types and is very simple to set up, use and maintain.

Built with operator safety in mind, the OFCU-1 remotely ignites samples inside a safety interlocked chamber using focused infrared heat from two tungsten-halogen lamps. Integral pressure vents ensure safe release of excess reaction pressure. A thick black acrylic observation window is provided on the OFCU-1 to allow users to visually check ignition has taken place.

Circle no. 435 Dopant Permeation Tubes

Kin-Tek Laboratories, Inc is a key manufacturer of dopant permeation tubes used in detection systems for trace concentrations of narcotics, explosives, chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and industrial airborne molecular contaminants (AMCs). Detection systems for these applications are based on ion mobility spectroscopy (IMS) and are typically used for airport (TSA) and other security applications, law enforcement, Immigration and Border Patrol, the military and atmospheric monitoring in computer chip manufacturing operations.

Dopant tubes continuously dispense a small flow of a reagent vapour used to enhance response to specific substances. The basic dopant tube is a small plastic cylinder with the pure

dopant compound sealed inside. Dopant vapour leaks slowly (and continuously) into the detection system sample stream where it reacts to enhance detection of the target compound.

Several configurations and kits are available for specific applications. Typical dopant tube kits for narcotics detection contain three tubes emitting ammonia vapour, supplied as a set and shipped in a metal cylinder. Kits for explosives detection in airports and other public areas contain a single tube emitting dichloromethane supplied in a plastic shipping tube. Other common dopants available include acetone and dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) in special configurations. Other materials are available for specialty applications.

The Purair 20 Ductless Fume Hood from Air Science has been designed to provide operator protection when using hazardous substances. A face velocity at 100fpm ensures containment of fumes and an alarm will alert the operator when the airflow falls to an unacceptable level. All mechanisms in the head section of the Purair 20 are on the clean side of the filter, thus preventing contamination. Switches and electrical components are totally isolated from the dirty airflow and away from any contamination. The work area has a removable spillage tray that can be easily cleaned. Optional integral lighting is available. The Purair 20 is 49" Wide by 27.5" Deep by 47.5" High. Other sizes are available up to 96" Wide. The main filter can be chosen from 14 different types of carbon, which include specialty media for vapours of organics, solvents, acids, mercury and formaldehyde. HEPA filters for particulate filtration are also available to suit the application needs. In addition, the Purair can be equipped with a secondary back-up filter for added protection. This filter is required by US standard ANSI Z9.5 section 4.12 4.2
