Laboratory Products 77 New Intelligent Particle Sizing Supports R&D Productivity

By streamlining method development, automating measurement and continuously verifying data quality, the new Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle size analyser from Malvern Instruments provides R&D scientists with the high degree of flexibility and responsiveness needed to drive efficient, cost-effective product and process development. Measuring particles from 10 nm to 3500 microns, delivering excellent submicron resolution and with the ability to quickly and easily easy switch between wet and dry analysis, the Mastersizer 3000 is the reliable solution for the widest possible range of applications. New to the market from the leaders in particle characterisation, the Mastersizer 3000 combines the highest optical performance with intelligent software, to bring expert measurement and analysis capabilities to experienced and novice users alike. It takes the guesswork and effort out of particle size measurement, leaving you free to simply use the results. Fast, flexible and with the smallest of footprints, the system handles powders, emulsions, slurries and suspensions with ease. Switching between the wet and dry measurement is simplicity itself thanks to an auto-locking measurement cell and automatic system initialisation, which ensure, robust measurements after any system change.

The modular disperser in the Mastersizer 3000’s Aero dry powder dispersion unit gives the flexibility to efficiently disperse robust or abrasive materials such as cement, or more fragile materials such as pharmaceutical and food ingredients. Its Hydro accessories for wet measurement deliver dispersion efficiency for a range of different sample volumes. They ensure bias-free sampling and their chemical resistance enables the use of an extensive array of different dispersants, extending measurement to the widest range of sample types.

With real-time feedback during method development and embedded expert guidance Mastersizer 3000 accelerates the evolution of a robust method for any new sample type. During subsequent routine measurement continuous data quality assessment verifies that each and every analysis has been properly carried out, maintaining the integrity of the information flow. These, along with a range of other features help all users to benefit from the full potential of Mastersizer 3000, without the need for expert knowledge or extensive training.

Circle no. 242 Custom Design Services Offer Custom Optimised Antibody Panels

Custom Design Services (CDS) from Beckman Coulter, Inc provide researchers with single and multicolour custom-tailored conjugate configurations as well as purified antibodies. Beckman Coulter scientists, having extensive experience in the design and optimisation of multicolour reagent panels, work with a wide variety of proprietary or customer-supplied human and non-human antibodies. The company uses a comprehensive array of fluorochromes to create tests for an expansive range of targets.

Two- to 10-colour panels can be composed using fluorochromes to meet specific experimental requirements. Proprietary tandem dye technology provides optimal coupling efficiency and enhances signal-to-noise ratio, so that dyes can be used to detect low-density antigens without the loss of sensitivity. Antibodies may be lyophilised or supplied in a specified buffer solution.

Krome Orange, a novel violet-excited organic dye from Beckman Coulter, expands the range of available choices and dye sensitivity limits for violet lasers and facilitates the development of high-quality, multicolour panels. The panels are packaged in exclusive black vials to protect against photobleaching.

“From purification through delivery, the product is tested at each step and performance is characterised to assure that each lot meets the client’s precise specifications,” said William Godfrey, Beckman Coulter Product Development Center Group Manager. “Our conjugation processes are controlled to provide optimal coupling efficiency, and lower compensation requirements simplify instrument setup and give more flexibility in optimising multicolour combinations.”

New Distributor of Cryopreserved Terminally Differentiated Human Hepatic Cells Merck Millipore recently announced that the company will be the initial distributor of HepaRG(TM

) human hepatic cells from Biopredic. HepaRG cells,

derived from a hepatocellular carcinoma, are supplied as cryopreserved, terminally differentiated cells and express major liver specific functions including Cytochrome P450 enzymes and drug transporters.

HepaRG cells provide a number of advantages over primary hepatocytes and liver slices for characterisation of the uptake, metabolism, and disposition of drug candidates, drug discovery, and high throughput screening. The supply of primary cells and tissue can be unpredictable and other transformed lines such as HepG2 have not gained widespread use due to loss of specific liver functions such as Cytochrome P450, thus impacting the proper assessment of toxicity.

“With more than 900 drugs having been implicated in causing liver injury and toxicity, there is a need for more accurate prediction of hepatic cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in humans,” noted Umesh A. Patel, PhD, Director, Lead Discovery. “While in vitro human liver preparations offer the most pertinent models, availability and inter-donor variability are significant drawbacks. In contrast, HepaRG(TM drug metabolising enzymes and transporters to facilitate ADME/tox studies.”
