2011 1999

With the introduction of Buyers’ Guides our first International Labmate Buyers’ Guide for instruments and chemicals was also introduced in 1976 at the Achema exhibition in Germany. It is still produced every year today in both paper and online format.

This year, 2012, we believe will be a significant one for the laboratory trade. Just as we introduced publications at trade shows, laboratory manufacturers do the same. Tradition usually has it that suppliers display their new products at their own domestic shows and this year all of the major shows occur in the same time frame – something I do not believe to have happened before.

The exhibition season kicks off with Pittcon in the US in March – I have been exhibiting since 1966 and 45 years later I am taking a break!

Arablab in Dubai follows, again in March. This show has grown very significant over the years and is visited by companies wishing to sell to the Middle East and Asia. We produce the catalogue and also take charge of a very important British presence.

Germanys biannual Analytica follows next in April, then comes CISILE China in May, then back to Germany for the triannual Achema - this particular show attracts some 200,00 visitors, and the biannual HET Instruments in September.

There are also major annual events in the UK including Fisher Scientific World in April, Scientific Laboratory Show in May and WWEM (Water, Wastewater & Environmental Management) in November. This is our own show in a slightly specialist market but with over 130 companies exhibiting it’s one not to be missed.

Today

Over the years we have expanded our journal base to eight major publications, six directories and three exhibitions. We have also introduced ILM Publications - our book division with a growing list of titles primarily in the areas of environmental and analytical science, and expanded our online facilities to include e-Bulletins, online journals and statistical marketing campaign monitoring. We have been Exporter of the Year for Hertfordshire and a Queens Award winner for Export Achievement, which resulted in a trip to the Palace.

I would like to thank our staff, who over the years have been proud to report on industry news and market innovative products useful to the trade. Of course without the support of you, our readers, we could not have got so far – thank you.

Gilson PIPETMAN®

pipette - 35 Years of Evolving

As Labmate celebrates 35 years, Peter Tudor from Gilson UK takes a look at how the PIPETMAN®

has changed since the company’s advertisement in the first ever issue.

The PIPETMAN was a mere five years old when the first issue of Labmate went to press. Gilson was just starting to introduce the PIPETMAN to the UK market. Over 35 years the pipette has become an indispensible part of the modern laboratory; so much so that some users hang on to them for as long as possible. We have even found a handful of people with PIPETMAN still in operation 40 years after buying them. The look and feel of PIPETMAN has changed very subtly, for example, Gilson phased out the original volume adjustment assembly once found on the handle. The rotary drive system was modified in response to the AIDS outcry in the 1980s to make it easier to adjust the volume with gloved hands. Eric Marteau D’Autry, Warren Gilson’s colleague and manufacturing mentor, introduced the steel tip

volume ejector in 1991. In 1995 the top adjuster knob was added. In the last decade, ergonomics became the focus and Gilson introduced the PIPETMAN®

Neo, which reduced pipetting forces by 50%.

The PIPETMAN Classic pipette is still recognised as the world’s standard for robustness, accuracy and precision; however, the product line continues to evolve. Reducing the risk of repetitive strain injuries (RSI) has seen our pipettes become a lot more comfortable to use. The new PIPETMAN®

force on the market due to a revolutionary redesigned piston assembly and internal mechanism. The PIPETMAN®

G, launched last year, has the lowest pipetting L,

another recent addition, was designed for the industry sector with superior comfort, safety and traceability. Its patented volume locking system eliminates variability and the light and comfortable new body enhances productivity.

Our PIPETMAN range also meets the demands of higher throughput laboratories with the introduction of the single channel and multichannel PIPETMAN®

M fully motorised pipette which has virtually zero pipetting forces.

Pipettes have played a part in many applications over the years. The MICROMAN, a positive displacement pipette invented by Gilson in the ‘80s, was arguably one of the most pivotal instruments in the development of forensic science, analytical studies in molecular biology and advances in PCR (polymerase chain reaction).

Gilson’s PIPETMAN continues to develop; ensuring scientists have access to cutting edge products, backed up by Gilson’s Lifetime Warranty.
