Chromatography 15 Compound Based Scanning Software Simplifies Multi-Residue Analysis with GC-MS/MS
Designed as ‘the gas chromatographers’ GC-MS system, Bruker’s new SCION TQ™ GC-MS/MS promotes ease of use and increased workflow in busy analytical laboratories. The advantages offered by hardware innovations – reducing the instrument footprint by half but at the same time improving performance over traditional gas chromatography systems – are supplemented by the utility and ease of use of the unique SCION Compound Based Scanning (CBS) software.
Bruker’s software for the SCION TQ includes a number of important tools and features to make method set up, data analysis and comparisons of similar spectra much easier. With gas chromatographers in mind, the SCION software package includes: a CBS Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) compound library for easy set up of methods; additional spectral libraries; plug in to multiple user-customisable spectral libraries with automatic search functions; and Bruker’s mass spectrometry (MS) workstation software.
Kefei Wang, Global GCMS Product Manager at Bruker CAM, said: “The software makes complicated analysis easy, particularly for those with little prior mass spectrometry knowledge. MRM set up requires no expert knowledge - the compound name may be simply dragged from the pre-installed compound library and the software auto-fills the full details of the method and manages the full duty cycle of the triple quad.“ Jim Koers, Bruker CAM Software Manager, added: “To put this into context, manual TQ method development for a 200 compound method would require around 12,000 keystrokes and take several days. With CBS, we can achieve a fully optimised method in a matter of hours, and with less than 200 keystrokes.”
The SCION TQ system comes complete with the Bruker compound library, which details some 2,500 MRM transitions. Results are presented in a standard pro-forma accepted across the industry and may be cross-referenced against known spectral libraries to aid interpretation and final delivery.

Lightweight Compact Digital Liquid Flow Meter for Any HPLC Pump
Featuring a single chip microcontroller and accurate to ± 1% of calibrated flow rates the lightweight 12-ounce FlowCal 5000 HPLC liquid flowmeter available from Tovatech supports FDA compliance for IQ, OQ and PQ validations on any HPLC pump. According to Tovatech Director, Dr Robert Sandor: "The FlowCal 5000 liquid flow meter is faster and more accurate than using timers while manually collecting fluid for gravimetric or volumetric measurement in calibrating HPLC pump flow rates. Flows from 0.05 to 25 millilitres per minute are independent of liquid type up to a 10 centipoise viscosity. Rates rounded to four digits are displayed on a backlit LCD while complete data rounded to a full 6-digit reading are output via a built-in RS232 interface."
The FlowCal 5000 liquid flowmeter is shipped with a UKAS traceable calibration certificate at 1.0 millilitre per minute or customers can specify standard 3-point calibrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 millilitres per minute, Dr Sandor said. He added: "On request we will calibrate the HPLC flow meter at user-specified flow rates within the unit’s 0.05 to 25 millilitres per minute operating range and provide FDA required annual re-certifications." The HPLC liquid flow meter is designed for use at the end of the HPLC flow system. The package includes a mounting kit for freestanding (table), wall or stack mounting positions, or for mounting on standard wide-necked reagent bottles. Included is a carrying case and cleaning kit. An optional thermal printer is available. All wetted parts are made of PTFE, PEEK, DAI-EL, PERFLOUR or Pyrex to handle common HPLC solvents.

New 7000 Flowmeter for GC (Gas Chromatography)
Ellutia are pleased to launch the 7000 Flowmeter for use in GC, the follow up to the best selling 6000 Flowmeter. From listening to customer feedback on the previous model the 7000 Flowmeter has a number of improvements over its predecessor. The pocket- sized unit is now smaller (130 x 68 x 30mm), lighter (150g), features a built in rechargeable battery and a full colour display. Despite the reduction in size the Flowmeter still offers the analytical performance required:
• Measures flows of Nitrogen, Air, Helium, Hydrogen, Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen, Argon and Argon/5% Methane • Resolution of 0.1ml/min
• Range of 0.1 to 500 ml/min (0.1-275 ml/min for CO2) • Accuracy +- 2.5% or 0.4 ml/min • Calibration traceable to UKAS Standards
In addition to standard flow measurement the 7000 Flowmeter has several modes designed specifically for the GC user. Linear Velocity mode allows the user to set their column diameter and then display the average column velocity in cm/sec. Split Flow mode allows the user to see a live display of both the split flow and split ratio.
Accurate and repeatable gas flow measurements are a crucial part of obtaining good results from your Gas Chromatograph. The new 7000 Flowmeter makes gas flow measurement easier and more accurate, helping to eliminate user errors.
We are very excited to be able to offer 7000 Flowmeter at a price point significantly lower than other models on the market. We hope that this low price will allow chromatographers who previously could not justify the expense of other higher priced flowmeter’s the chance to have access to this valuable tool.

Even with the launch of the new 7000 Flowmeter Ellutia will continue to offer calibration and repair services for the 6000 Flowmeter.
Ellutia recommends that the 6000 Flowmeter is
re-calibrated annually. Ellutia has full re-calibration facilities for the 6000 Flowmeter at both our UK and American sites.
The Flowmeter’s are calibrated for all gasses by a 23 point calibration, in a temperature controlled room, by dual flow controllers which are calibrated annually to UKAS calibration standard.
