Accelerate Adoption of Next-generation MS for Clinical Research, Forensic Toxicology and Clinical Trials

AB Sciex and Indigo BioSystems recently announced an agreement to jointly market mass spectrometry solutions that streamline data acquisition and automate data review to ensure high quality results in clinical research and forensic toxicology as well as pre-clinical and clinical trials of new drugs. These joint solutions are expected to simplify and accelerate the use of new-generation mass spectrometry technologies. Under the terms of the agreement, AB Sciex is combining its industry-leading mass spectrometry platforms with Indigo BioSystems’s expert system software ASCENT™ with new-generation algorithms to simplify the use of mass spectrometry for those who are accustomed to using easy-to-use lab analysers. ASCENT™ adds value by automating the processing and review of data generated on AB Sciex mass spectrometry systems, which deliver the most accurate data possible with identification, quantitation and confirmation uniquely rolled up in a single workflow.

“Automation is an important step to accelerate the adoption of new-generation mass spectrometry for clinical research, forensics and clinical trials,” said Joe Anacleto, Vice President of Applied Markets and Clinical Research, AB Sciex. “We are striving to make mass spectrometry as easy to use as possible for researchers analysing steroids, pain panels, drugs of abuse and an expanding variety of substances. Our relationship with Indigo BioSystems allows us to bring LC/MS/MS solutions to researchers who may not ordinarily consider mass spectrometry but can now have the assurance of a simplified workflow while getting all the attractive benefits of LC/MS/MS technology.” LC/MS/MS, which is a versatile, proven analytical technology, provides significant benefits over alternative technologies, such as GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry). LC/MS/MS represents the new frontier of mass spectrometry, delivering the most accurate results, reduced sample preparation, lower cost per sample, and integrated qualitative and quantitative analysis. The combination of AB SCIEX’s and Indigo’s technologies will ensure the accuracy of results, speed up batch release and increase compliance with QC rules needed to ensure high quality. “By embedding the knowledge of assay experts into the analysis software, we provide the foundation for smarter research laboratories,” said Indigo CEO Raul Zavaleta. “We are pleased to be partnering with the industry leader in LC/MS/MS to achieve this goal.”

Spectrophotometers Now Available with PC Control

For the first time, WPA users have the opportunity to control their spectrophotometer from a Windows PC. Resolution software from Biochrom is available in four different suites that enable users to meet individual application requirements.

Resolution delivers maximum instrument control providing straightforward data analysis and incorporates a familiar Microsoft®

Office look, compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7.

Resolution Lite – entry-level package with basic functions; Resolution - all-purpose spectroscopy package; Resolution Life Science - all in one life sciences applications package; and Resolution CFR - if users need full FDA 21 CFR part 11 compliance.

An intuitive user interface makes it simple to measure samples, analyse data, print, report or export in multiple formats. Users can make fixed wavelength measurements at a single wavelength in Absorbance, % Transmittance or concentration modes, rapidly carry out a qualitative sample check and monitor sample or assay stability, and design and schedule validation tests. Each suite also includes application specific options in addition to the basic functions.

Launch of the World’s First Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS

Agilent Technologies, Inc announced the launch of the Agilent 8800 triple quadrupole ICP- MS (ICP-QQQ), the first and only instrument of its kind. The new ICP-QQQ system offers improved performance compared to single quadrupole ICP- MS, and provides MS/MS operation for controlled and consistent interference removal in reaction mode. ICP-QQQ also addresses high-end application requirements, with flexible analysis capabilities unavailable on single quadrupole machines. The unique QQQ configuration of the Agilent 8800 controls the ions that enter the collision/reaction cell, so the reaction conditions remain consistent and predictable even if the sample composition changes. The new instrument provides turnkey operation in a range of novel reaction modes, delivering effective and consistent interference removal for problematic elements in difficult samples. The Agilent 8800 can also be set up to operate like a single-quad ICP-MS, offering the security of replicating existing and familiar methodologies.

“Agilent’s 8800 ICP-QQQ retains the ease of use of a standard ICP-MS and provides better detection limits for phosphorus-containing and sulphur-containing compounds measured using LC-ICP-MS,” said Dr Jorge Ruiz Encinar, department of physical and analytical chemistry, University of Oviedo, Spain. The 8800 ICP-QQQ analyses problematic elements in samples across a range of applications, including: ultra-trace analysis of elements that suffer interferences in high-purity samples (Ge and As in HCl; V and Ti in H2SO4, and more); reliable low-level measurement of selenium and arsenic in soil, rock and plant materials, where both polyatomic and doubly charged interferences may occur; and quantitative analysis of sulphur and phosphorus in DNA and protein/peptides for life-science applications. “The Agilent 8800 ICP-QQQ is a revolutionary new ICP-MS instrument, offering maximum flexibility for high-end research and for solving difficult analytical problems,” said Philip Binns, Agilent Vice President for Spectroscopy Products. “The 8800 joins Agilent’s remarkable 7700 Series ICP-MS, which remains the benchmark for high- performance single-quadrupole ICP-MS. With the 8800, 7700 and recently introduced 4100 MP-AES as part of our portfolio, Agilent’s technology leadership in atomic spectroscopy is stronger than ever.”
