Laboratory Products 65 Faster Strep Grouping Solution
Thermo Fisher Scientific recently launched the Thermo Scientific PathoDxtra Strep Grouping Kit. This latex agglutination kit offers a faster strep grouping solution than traditional methods for all clinically significant Lancefield groups.
Designed to improve workflow efficiencies, the nitrous acid extraction instantaneously extracts the cell antigens and the test does not require rehydration or incubation.
“Previously, choosing the best strep grouping kit involved compromise” said Julie Elston, Global Product Manager, Immunodiagnostics, Thermo Fisher. “Acid extraction kits offered speed but did not detect group D strep reliably, while enzyme kits detected all groups but required rehydration and incubation steps, adding significant time to testing procedures. With PathoDxtra there is no compromise, this kits gives instantaneous extraction and detects all clinically significant streps reliably, including group D. It really couldn’t be simpler.”
PathoDxtra provides laboratories with the opportunity to improve their workflow, save time and reduce costs.

Online Monitoring of Cloud Point Determination
The development of pharmaceutical ingredients requires extensive testing and evaluation. One crucial parameter is the exact determination of the cloud point, the temperature at which the ingredient starts to crystallise. In most cases, the cloud point occurs very abruptly, making this determination difficult. The downside of conventional measurement procedures is that an exact process monitoring cannot be performed in real time. This however can be solved through the use of a special mini process probe from Hellma Analytics that monitors the process online in combination with a spectrophotometer. Even as the first crystal forms there is a significant change of the absorption spectra making an exact determination of the cloud point guaranteed. The mini process probe has removable light path tips with anti-twist protection, thus 100% reproducibility of the results is ensured. Handy dimensions as well as high-quality sealing components make this probe a robust and flexible solution. This mini process probe has FSMA connections and is available with either UV or NIR optical fibres. A modular construction system enables the adaption to various customer requests, for example, the optical measuring component can be produced from quartz or sapphire and different lengths are available.

Cost-Effective Eater Analysis with new Ammonia Electrode
Miniaturisation of Large-Scale Testing Procedures As a leading technology partner for the diagnostic and pharmaceutical industry
Greiner Bio-One is introducing its new CELLreactor. The innovative 50ml polypropyl- ene filter top tube enables the miniaturisation of large-scale setups while simultane- ously maximising the number of parallel experiments. It can therefore be used as a small bioreactor for the cultivation of cells.
Each CELLreactor cap on the 11.5cm long tube has eight holes and contains a polytetrafluorethylene-coated USP Class VI certified capillary pore membrane. With a pore size of 0.2µm, the membrane not only keeps the contents of the tube completely sterile, but also ensures an excellent gas exchange. Liquids are mixed using stan-dard shakers in order to minimise the formation of foam and any cellular shearing forces during the cultivation process. Due to its conical design, the tube fits into all standard 50ml centrifuge rotors and the cells can be sedimented directly within the tube.
In addition to applications in the field of cell cultures, the CELLreactor is also suitable for the expansion of aerobic bacteria, yeasts and other microorganisms in suspen-sion culture and for storing components and liquids that require gas exchange.

Ammonium ion loading is an important parameter for determining the amount of pollution in water. With the new ammonia electrode from Metrohm, which has replaceable modules and membranes, it is possible to carry out the appropriate analyses economically.
The ammonium ions contained in the sample are converted into ammonia through the addition of NaOH. The ammonia then diffuses through a gas- permeable membrane and is detected by means of a combined pH electrode. Depending on the application, Metrohm offers a choice of two versions.
Chromogenic Media Detects S. typhi and S. paratyphi
bioMérieux’s chromID Salmonella takes advantage of three chromogenic substrates to selectively isolate and differentiate all Salmonella serotypes, including S. typhi and S. paratyphi. Salmonella spp. are observed 18 – 24 hours after incubation as pale pink to mauve colonies on a colourless background and are easily distinguished from non-Salmonella spp. which appear as blue, turquoise or colourless colonies. This optimum differentiation of cultures virtually eliminates the risk of missing a Salmonella infection.
The performance of chromID Salmonella is enhanced by the medium’s increased nutrient capacity and colour intensity, while the specific esterase activity from Salmonella increases the sensitivity of detection and specificity of colouration, offering greater reliability and performance than previously achievable. Identification and susceptibility testing of Salmonella isolated on this chromID medium correlates well with tests performed after isolation on a reference medium1, avoiding the need for subculture of strains. Microbiologists using chromID Salmonella can take advantage of a complete solution for the detection of Salmonella, simultaneously benefitting from considerable savings in time and money.

For measurements in waters with low concentrations of ammonium, such as drinking water or boiler feed water, the NH3-ISE (Low) version with preassembled, individually tested and certified complete modules is recommended. The membranes used in this version are characterised by a faster response time and lower detection limit.
The demands on devices used for measurements in highly polluted samples, such as wastewater containing oil residues, are correspondingly higher.
For these, Metrohm offers the NH3-ISE (High), the version in which only the membrane needs to be replaced at regular intervals.
The type of membrane used in this version is characterised by shorter regeneration times and better signal stability at high ammonium concentrations.
